As we come close to the end of the week, a reminder to RSVP as the Nelson Mandela Museum is taking Nelson Mandela's legacy all over South Africa.

Between the 28 and 29 October 2026, we shift our compasses towards the Free State where we are collaborating with the University of the Free State, mangaungmetro as well as the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, FS to bring you the 5th Edition of the African Liberation Heritage Indaba.

All of that is happening as part of the celebrations of OR Tambo Month.

TAKING MADIBA'S LEGACY TO THE PEOPLE! 🇿🇦

As we come close to the end of the week, the Nelson Mandela Museum is extremely busy taking Nelson Mandela's legacy all over South Africa.

We go as far as deep into the rural areas, as Madiba himself never distinguished amongst the people he and his comrades fought so hard to liberate.

On the 22 October 2026 the Museum will be partnering with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality as well as the ortambo_gardenofremembrance to bring you the OR Tambo Children's Legacy Programme, and about a week later, we shift our compasses towards the Free State where we are collaborating with the University of the Free State, Mangaung Metropolitian Municipality as well as the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, FS to bring you the 5th Edition of the African Liberation Heritage Indaba.

STILL CELEBRATING OR TAMBO MONTH! 🇿🇦

It's a Thursday still celebrating OR Tambo Month.

The Nelson Mandela Museum continues to be a hub of history and understanding of the Liberation Struggle that Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and their comrades were central in leading.

Cingco JSS, a school in the rural side of Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, that produced the likes of Dr Bevan Goqwana, is amongst the schools that visited the museum today.

3RD EDITION OF THE O.R. TAMBO CHILDREN'S LEGACY PROGRAMME 🇿🇦📚

The Nelson Mandela Museum in partnership with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and the Oliver Tambo Garden of Remembrance will co-host the 3rd O.R. Tambo Children's Legacy Programme.

Theme: “Reclaiming the Soul of the Nation: Revolutionary Morality and Democratic Renewal.”

Participants: Schools around Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality will be participating in the following activities:

| ANC YOUTH LEAGUE PAYS HOMAGE TO OR TAMBO 🇿🇦

The ANCYouth League President, Comrade Collen Malatji visited the Oliver Tambo Garden of Remembrance one of the linksites of the Nelson Mandela Museum.

In his visit to the Garden of Remembrance he was accompanied by the ANC Alfred Nzo Youth League as well as the Provincial Youth League Leadership.

Amongst them were the Alfred Nzo District Municipality Mayor Cllr TS Sobuthongo as well as the hosting Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality Mayor Cllr TD Mafumbatha.

The visit was aimed at paying homage, wreath laying as well as engage with the community in the grass roots that shaped the selfless and longest-serving President of the ANC, OR Tambo.

The family of OR Tambo was also in the entourage of the Youth League.

THE NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM CELEBRATES JUSTICE NAVI PILLAY – 2026 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATE! 🇿🇦✨

The Nelson Mandela Museum celebrates the addition to South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize family, Justice Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, who was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on 09 October 2026.

She becomes the fifth South African laureate after Chief Albert Luthuli (1960), Archbishop Desmond Tutu (1984), and President Nelson Mandela and President FW de Klerk (jointly 1993).

The Norwegian Nobel Committee honoured her for her lifelong efforts to promote peace and international law, and to ensure that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted — from defending anti-apartheid activists including Nelson Mandela, to serving as South Africa’s first non-white woman High Court judge, as Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

South Africa truly is a hub of international peace and justice, and this recognition says it all!

The month of October, which is marked as OR Tambo Month, the Nelson Mandela Museum will co-host the OR Tambo Children's Legacy Programme in partnership with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and the Oliver Tambo Garden of Remembrance.

On Thursday and Friday last week, the Museum's Heritage and Conservation Unit embarked on an activation campaign that saw about 11 high schools in the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Locality visited.

This activation was aimed at ensuring that the schooling community of Mbizana is informed and in sync with the programme.
