Here is a small glimpse of HORIZON - an exhibition of exceptional work by Etienne de Villiers which is opening at Blacksmith Yard THIS SATURDAY, 25 JULY AT 11:30. The horizon marks the boundary between what we know and what lies beyond. Inspired by the vast Karoo landscape, this body of work explores the traces people leave behind—homes, ruins, dams, fences, and quiet scars in the veld—each bearing witness to lives shaped by hope, perseverance, loss, and longing. After more than four decades as a filmmaker telling South African stories, Etienne de Villiers now turns to paper and canvas, creating contemplative landscapes that capture fleeting moments and imagined histories, inviting us to reflect on memory, place, and the enduring pull of the horizon.

INNER WEATHER by Sharon Bischoff opens at Blacksmith Yard at 11:30 on Saturday, 25 July.

This powerful exhibition explores the hidden emotional landscapes that shape how we see ourselves and others. Through portraiture, mixed media, and layered symbolism, Bischoff examines the tension between outward appearance and inner experience.

Featured works include RABAN, a portrait of a man who is present yet unseen, and FEARLESS, a mixed media work born from the artist’s exploration of new materials, masks, graffiti, and the complex relationship between our internal and external worlds.

JOIN US AT 11:30 THIS SATURDAY (25 JULY) FOR THE OPENING OF “I WALK ON GILDED SPLINTERS” - Werner Ungerer’s deeply personal exhibition exploring grief, masculine silence, inherited trauma, and the shadow self.

Created over five years and shaped by the su***de of the artist’s brother in 2023, the exhibition brings together meticulously handcrafted works in calligraphy, ink, embroidery, and drawing. Through meditative, labour-intensive processes, Ungerer transforms personal writings and lived experience into powerful acts of witness and remembrance.

Rather than offering easy answers, I Walk on Gilded Splinters creates a space for reflection—acknowledging the complexity of loss and the quiet companionship that art can offer in the face of grief.
