This is how our Human Rights Day was commemorated!

Yesterday, we gathered to celebrate Human Rights Day in a creative and engaging way.

Thank you to the youth from the Missionvale Care Centre, the children who participated, the Missionvale Youth Care Centre, the Missionvale Care Centre, and all the people who joined us. Your presence made the day truly special.

Everyone took part in making origami birds and writing their reflections on human rights. The activity kept us focused and inspired, and together we created some beautiful pieces.

Exhibition open... Arts Hall closed

The SUM NIL exhibition is on show in the Arts Hall and basement of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum until the 18 May 2026.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is hosting the exhibition Sum Nil by Gqeberha-based artist Taryn Jade in contribution to her Master’s in Visual Art at Nelson Mandela University.

The Arts Hall has been closed since July 2025 due to electrical issues. In addition to the electrical damage, the basement of this 100-year-old building has experienced water damage due to flooding during heavy rains.

Her exhibition includes works from the Art Museums Permanent Collection.

Her exhibition also features works of: George Pemba, Fred Page, Mxolisi Dolla Sapeta, Tm Hopwood, Joff, Sh*tty City PE, Twiza and Boiling point.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Sum Nil is an exhibition that reflects on neglected public infrastructure and shared civic responsibility in Gqeberha. Bringing together Taryn Jade work with pieces by other local artists and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal Art Museum collection, the exhibition explores themes of decay, care, and belonging. Using industrial materials, wool, ceramics, sound, stop-motion, and debris collected from the city’s streets, she situated the exhibition in Gqeberha’s history and present realities.

Sum Nil invites visitors to consider what it means to rebuild and care for a shared future.

The exhibition is on show in the Lorimer Hall of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum until May 2026

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum presents in partnership with aBantu Development Agency's project, Ingqungquthela (The Conference).

The aBantu Development Agency brought together a group of nine creatives from East London, Gqeberha and Komani in the Eastern Cape. In this recent project, the aBantu Development Agency continued their aim to support the preservation of Amaxhosa beadwork and culture while pushing boundaries and initiating projects for young creatives to express contemporary indigenous culture in new innovative ideas.

Over the past 40 years, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum has invested in traditional beadwork as an important artform of the Eastern Cape.

The Art Museum's beadwork collection now boasts over 2000 unique pieces representing the various styles and traditions from across the Eastern Cape. The Art Museum's collection also includes beadwork that the NPO, The Friends of the Art Museum has donated to the Art Museum. A few of these works will also be on display in this exhibition.

A selection of traditional beadwork, contemporary pieces and Maxhosa works that the Art Museum has purchased is on show. Beadwork and textiles from the Art Museum's permanent collection is on display alongside the young creatives designs.

🕊️ POP IN, FOLD A BIRD, POP OUT!

Celebrate Human Rights Day at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

Join us for a light, fun, walk‑in‑and‑out activity where anyone can make a colourful origami bird.

Why birds?
Birds remind us of freedom, dignity and care — the heart of Human Rights Day.
They move across the city, seeing what is cared for and what is forgotten.
By folding a bird and adding a message of hope or a right you value,
you become part of a shared moment of community reflection and togetherness.

📅 21 March
⏰ 10:00 –13:30
🎟️ Free • Walk‑in‑and‑out • Everyone welcome
