Last evening in my Belgian studio.

The paintings are out of their frames, gathered together, preparing to travel with me to South Africa.

Looking at all these layers of colour, traces and gestures, I can’t help but reflect…

Oh, what a Belgian season this has been. 🙌

So much painting, experimenting, discovering. Beautiful encounters, unexpected turns, and moments that will stay with me.

I’ve followed my curiosity, trusted my instincts, allowed the work to surprise me. And perhaps most meaningfully, I’ve seen my paintings reach people who recognise something of themselves in them.

For that, I’m deeply grateful.

Now these canvases are about to cross continents, carrying the traces of a season that has meant so much to me.

The journey is still unfolding. 🌀

Two grandchildren, translated into paint. 🎀

These two portraits were commissioned as a birthday surprise for their grandmother. 🎁

What interests me in a portrait is never likeness alone. I’m looking for the expression, character, colour and small particularities that make someone unmistakably themselves and then translating those into a painting that can live far beyond the photograph it began with.

Seeing these two works together with their grandmother (and later beside the children themselves) made the commission complete.

A portrait can mark a moment in a family’s life, but it can also become something that stays. A piece of their visual history.

Private Portrait Commissions are created individually in dialogue with each client and within the language of my wider painting practice. 🎨
