🚧 MEIRINGSPOORT | R486 MILLION ROAD REPAIRS ON TRACK FOR DECEMBER 2026 ACCESS
Today, I visited the Meiringspoort roadworks to assess progress and receive an updated briefing from our project team.
Good progress is being made on the R486 million emergency flood-damage repair project along the 21 km N12 section between De Rust and Klaarstroom:
✅ Flood debris has been cleared and damaged road sections are being repaired.
✅ Road embankments, drainage structures and flood protection are being restored.
✅ Temporary bypasses are being built to enable single-lane traffic access in December 2026, subject to safety requirements.
✅ Full project completion remains targeted for October 2028.
AN APPEAL TO THE COMMUNITIES OF DE RUST AND KLAARSTROOM
Reports of attempts by a small number of individuals to disrupt or stop construction are concerning. Such disruptions could delay the restoration of this vital road connection, affecting residents, businesses, road users and the regional economy.
The actions of a few must not be confused with the interests of the broader communities.
I appeal to residents and community leaders in both towns to work with our project team, support uninterrupted construction and report threats or obstruction attempts through the appropriate channels.
Legitimate concerns must be addressed through constructive engagement—not by disrupting essential infrastructure repairs.
Our priority is to restore safe access through Meiringspoort as quickly as possible.
We are rebuilding this critical road, strengthening its resilience against future floods and reconnecting communities.
Progress must continue.
