Dumile Feni (19421991) was one of South Africas most important expressionist artists, widely celebrated for his powerful drawings, sculptures, and deeply emotional depictions of the human condition. Born in Worcester in the Western Cape, Feni rose to prominence in the 1960s for works that reflected the pain, resilience, and humanity of Black South Africans during apartheid. His distinctive style, marked by fluid lines and intense psychological depth, earned him international recognition and the nickname the Goya of the townships.

After leaving South Africa in exile in 1968, Feni lived and worked in London, New York, and Los Angeles, continuing to produce art that explored displacement, struggle, and identity. Today his work is held in major public and private collections worldwide, and he remains regarded as one of the most influential figures in South African art history.

Donaueschinger Musiktage commissioned William Kentridge to do the poster motif for 2023. It continues the series of artist posters for the Donaueschinger Musiktage that was established in the 1960s and which already included artists such as Joan Miró, Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz and Neo Rauch, and more recently Angela Bulloch, Shilpa Gupta, Jutta Koether and Martin Assig made contributions.

Lydia Rilling (Artistic Director of the Donaueschinger Musiktage): "Over 30 years, William Kentridge has created a unique oeuvre that fuses various arts. Music plays an important role in it, from his early films to his most recent musical theater works. Kentridge has been there has also frequently collaborated with contemporary composers. The megaphone first appears in his imagery in the 1990s. According to Kentridge, megaphones indicate what 'needs to be heard or said outside of oneself'. Over the years, the megaphone motif appears in "The megaphone has become an icon of William Kentridge's work."

William Kentridge, the South African artist known for his multi-disciplinary approach, has frequently employed the motif of the megaphone throughout his body of work. This recurring symbol often represents communication, authority, and the power dynamics present in society. In his "Second-hand Reading" series from 2014, Kentridge incorporated megaphones into his drawings, further emphasizing themes of voice, expression, and the dissemination of information. Through this motif, Kentridge engages with the complexities of language, politics, and history, inviting viewers to reflect on the role of communication in shaping our understanding of the world.

Salvador Dalí's painting "Les Caprices de Goya" is a tribute to the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya. In this artwork, Dalí reinterprets Goya's series of etchings "Los Caprichos." Dalí's version features distorted and dreamlike imagery, characteristic of his surreal style. The painting showcases Dalí's admiration for Goya while adding his own surreal and imaginative touch. It's a captivating blend of two artists' perspectives on the whimsical and the mysterious.

Salvador Dalí was a prominent Spanish surrealist artist known for his eccentric and imaginative works. He contributed significantly to the art world by pioneering the Surrealist movement alongside artists like André Breton. Dalí's distinctive style involved dreamlike, often bizarre imagery, precise realism combined with fantastical elements, and a touch of the subconscious. He explored the world of dreams, the unconscious mind, and the irrational, pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques. His iconic paintings like "The Persistence of Memory" and "The Elephants" remain symbols of surrealism's impact on modern art, challenging conventional interpretations and inviting viewers into his surreal universe.
