You never know what you might find beneath your feet! 👀

We nearly stepped on a fossil that could be around 2 million years old.
Because this area was once a mine, excavated rock was used to grade the dirt roads - and sometimes, ancient fossils end up right where we walk. 🦴

Fossil Friday: Swimming in 165 million year old mammal relatives? ⚠️🏊‍♂️

While dinosaurs dominated the Jurassic, a small, otter-sized mammaliaform was exploring a very different way of life. 🦦🦴

Meet Megacauda sungei, a 165-million-year-old animal discovered in Inner Mongolia, China, that is helping scientists rethink the evolution of early mammals.

Its fossil preserves evidence of specialised throat anatomy and adaptations associated with swimming, suggesting that some mammal-like traits evolved earlier than previously recognised.

Even more fascinating, this discovery offers evidence that early mammaliaforms were already adapting to different environments while dinosaurs walked the Earth. 🦖

It’s another reminder that mammal evolution was far more complex than we once imagined!
