Knysna Fine Art Knysna Fine Art is one of South Africa’s finest galleries. We value for insurance and probate.

We specialise in contemporary South African art in a variety of media, although a number of international fine artists are exhibited. The gallery also handles the work of the South African masters and works closely with vendors and collectors. Recent sales include major works by Gerard Sekoto, J.H Pierneef, Lucas Sithole and Robert Hodgins

The owner is Trent Read, the elder son of the late Everard Read, who was the doyen of South African art dealers and Trent is the fifth generation of his family to be a dealer. The gallery moved to Thesen House in 2010 and there are very few galleries anywhere to have such beautiful space in which to operate. We have recently opened a new venue in the same building – A Different Drummer handles ceramics, objets de vertu, photographs and fine tribal artefacts, and has rapidly established a reputation for excellence with collectors, architects & interior designers. We consult to museums, corporate and private collectors both here and internationally and offer expert advice on the care and maintenance of collections. Our expertise in the design of environments to show art at its finest is used extensively by architects and designers.

IN FRAGILE KEEPING

A solo exhibition by Elodie Burls opening Saturday 31 October 2026 from 11 am to 1 pm.

“In our increasingly tawdry world of mass-produced AI slop and clickbait, beautiful handmade artworks stand out all the more with their inherent honesty and quality shining from amidst all of the cheap imitations.

Such is the work of Elodie Burls, and we are privileged to be giving her the first solo exhibition in what I know will be an important career.

She has taken a recherché technique, mastered it utterly, and is creating works that combine glowing and lambent colours like sun through stained glass with structures that are dreamlike and yet modern and matter-of-fact simultaneously.

These landscapes and “pavilions” remind me of artists as diverse as John Piper and Piranesi but, as all good works do, they have a sense of place, and they were made in the gentle light of the Elgin Valley in which she lives.”

- Trent Read 2026

TERRA INCOGNITA

An exhibition of contemporary landscapes opening Saturday 31 October 2026 from 11 am to 1 pm.

“The title of this show emphasizes the opposite of stable ground and firm foundations and refers to shifting and contrasting perspectives, unknown territories, fluid horizons and raw geographies. Landscapes are depicted in all its many forms and the works become metaphors for our journey on earth through the beautiful, the sublime and the terrifying."

We are thrilled to show this oil painting "Soft Power" by Claire Liechtenstein. The dimensions are 154 x 154 cm.

"Claire Lichtenstein (she/her) is an abstract painter based in Wilderness, Western Cape. Working primarily in oil paint, she makes layered, gestural paintings shaped by landscape, colour, light, memory and the body. Her practice moves between abstraction, embodiment and myth, using painting as a way to process what is felt before it can fully be understood.

Claire’s techniques include immersive tactile play, considered colour placement, the adding and scraping away of paint, and listening to emotive music to create a meditative, immersive practice that develops trust in the relationship between self, the canvas and the paint. Claire’s research is informed by intersectional feminist theory through themes of survivorship, misogyny, violence and repair.

Recently, Claire has been investigating the theory of colour as light. Finding the right colour/light relationship creates a reactionary device, causing shapes to vibrate and come to life. This generates an embodied, phenomenological response in the viewer. For Claire, this is the translation of emotion into form - deciphering trauma into psychic landscape - resulting in a final, imbued, energetic object which she can then take time to sit with and reflect on, creating a momentary resolve."

After over three years of studying abroad, I spent April & May this year in Knysna (where I went to school) painting for this exhibition. My family had sold the house in Plettenberg Bay where I grew up, and I couldn’t help feeling a sense of estrangement on returning as a visitor rather than a resident.

How do you paint the feeling of losing your childhood home? What does homesickness look like? There are moments that are real, like the roads I spent so long commuting from Plett to Knysna, or the flowers that bloomed up the road from me as a boy, or the drip castles I made as a child, but I had to bring in a Messenger as a way of reconciling that fact. It is a way of moving forward. A way of sending my condolences to a place I cannot get back to.

Who are the Messengers to a place that exists in memory? I think of bats, capable of flying back into the darkness of memory. Men in suits with their backs turned to us. Looking at something we cannot see. Men who are all grown up, isolated on sandy planes or empty chairs, as if someone has just gotten up. This show is a way to get back to a place that only lives in memory.
