Just four months after his release from 27 years in prison, Madiba sat down with ABC’s Ted Koppel at City College in Harlem for his first ever US town meeting. Over 71 minutes, in front of an over-capacity crowd at Aaron Davis Hall.
In this moment, Koppel pressed him on his friendships with Yasser Arafat, Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi.
Madiba was completely unperturbed.
No politicking. No pretense. No adjusting his beliefs to make others comfortable. He stood up for his principles, unashamedly - reminding the world that he would not be told who his friends should be.
This clip stays with us because it shows everything we loved about him - his integrity and his humour. He could stand firm on his principles and still end with a smile that had the whole auditorium on its feet.
The principle never left the man, and the man never lost his joy.
That was Madiba. Unwavering in his beliefs. Unapologetically himself.
