The Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), in partnership with Electra Mining Africa 2026, is proud to introduce The Explorers' Pitch—a Dragons' Den-style competition that challenges students to turn geological ideas into investment opportunities.

This isn't just another student competition. It's your opportunity to think like an exploration professional, present your ideas to industry experts, and demonstrate why your project deserves funding.

👥 Teams of 3 will develop a proposal for a South African exploration project, including:
🪨 A compelling geological target

The GSSA was proud to join the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) at the National Science Month Launch held at the Sebokeng Vaal University of Technology (VUT) campus.

It was a day filled with inspiring talks, thought-provoking debates, and meaningful engagement with scholars, students, and fellow scientific organisations. Events like these remind us of the importance of collaboration in growing the geoscience profession and inspiring the next generation of Earth scientists.

Thank you to Minister Blade Mzimande for bringing the scientific community together to celebrate the role of science in shaping South Africa’s future.

The 2026 Alex Du Toit memorial lecture series was presented by Associate Professor Robyn Pickering (University of Cape Town) between the 8th and 22nd of April.

This year, the lecture series took place in Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Gaborone, Durban and Gqeberha. Assoc. Prof. Pickering presented a talk entitled, “Early humans and hydrology: the geology and dating of the last 3 million years of southern Africa.” She is the second woman to present the lecture series, after Dr Edna Plumstead in 1969, and attracted audiences consistently over 60 participants with 100 in Johannesburg.

The GSSA in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand will be releasing an online copy of the talk - watch this space!
