The 2026 Alex Du Toit memorial lecture series was presented by Associate Professor Robyn Pickering (University of Cape Town) between the 8th and 22nd of April.

This year, the lecture series took place in Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Gaborone, Durban and Gqeberha. Assoc. Prof. Pickering presented a talk entitled, โ€œEarly humans and hydrology: the geology and dating of the last 3 million years of southern Africa.โ€ She is the second woman to present the lecture series, after Dr Edna Plumstead in 1969, and attracted audiences consistently over 60 participants with 100 in Johannesburg.

The GSSA in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand will be releasing an online copy of the talk - watch this space!

The Geological Society of South Africa is proud to host the event Geotech for Geologists on 18 March 2026. This event brings together geologists, geotechnical engineers, rock engineers, engineering geologists and industry professionals to explore the latest developments in geotechnical practice and share practical insights relevant to the South African context.

Understanding geotechnical principles is crucial for geologists, as it enhances their ability to assess ground conditions, contributes to safer and more efficient geological analysis, and improves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

With a focus on technical knowledge, networking, and real-world applications, Geotechnical for Geologists offers a valuable opportunity for professional growth and collaboration.

Yesterday, we celebrated International Womenโ€™s Day 2026 by recognising the incredible contributions of women in geoscience โš’๏ธ

At the Geological Society of South Africa, we celebrate the geologists, researchers, educators, and industry professionals who continue to shape our understanding of the Earth. From exploring mineral resources to studying the planetโ€™s history recorded in rocks, women are playing a vital role in advancing geoscience.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œGive To Gain,โ€ reminds us that by sharing knowledge, mentoring the next generation, and supporting one another, we accelerate progress toward gender equality in science and the geoscience profession.

Let us continue to uplift and empower women in geology as we work together to build a stronger, more inclusive geoscience community.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Today, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women and girls in science and the vital role they play in shaping a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive future.

At the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), we recognise that diversity in geoscience and across all STEM fields strengthens research, drives discovery, and inspires progress. Empowering women and girls in science is not just about representation,itโ€™s about unlocking potential, advancing knowledge, and building the next generation of leaders.

Letโ€™s continue to:
โœจ Encourage young girls to pursue STEM careers
โœจ Support mentorship and leadership opportunities
โœจ Champion inclusion in scientific spaces
โœจ Celebrate the achievements of women in geoscience and beyond

When we invest in women and girls in science, we invest in a better future for all.

This morning, Minrom attended the GSSA SAIMM breakfast as a sponsor and had the privilege of listening to Dr Jeannette McGillโ€™s presentation, โ€œFrom 4km underground to 8km aboveโ€, which focused on leadership and resilience, drawing parallels between the extreme conditions of deep-level mining and high-altitude exploration.

Not only is she the past president of the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA) and a current member of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), but she is also recognised as a trailblazer who has reached both the physical extremes of the Earth and significant professional milestones in the mining industry. Her achievements are characterised by a unique "underground-to-above" trajectory, spanning from Mponeng Mine to climbing Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest - from the world's deepest mine to the highest peaks. She also holds the distinction of being the first technical woman to work on every mine to which she was appointed.

Her inspirational presentation served as a reminder of the importance of resilience and that meaningful growth can only be found beyond our comfort zones.

Last nightโ€™s Mine, Wine & Dine Gala Dinner was a standout celebration of Africaโ€™s excellence in mining and winemaking. Proudly endorsed by the Geological Society of South Africa, it brought together some of the continentโ€™s biggest names across both industries.

Hosted at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, the evening was a powerful reminder of what happens when the right people come together around a shared purpose. From tastings by 18 exceptional South African winemakers to a superb four-course dining experience and live entertainment throughout the night - every moment delivered.

A real thrill to rub shoulders with Africaโ€™s mining elite and celebrate the people driving innovation, excellence, and impact across the continent๐Ÿทโ›๏ธ
