Atmospheric, introspective, and deeply expressive — Richard Hayes explores the space between realism and imagination through portraiture, surrealism, and gothic-inspired imagery. His works often carry a quiet emotional weight, inviting viewers into worlds that feel both familiar and dreamlike.
Inspired by artists such as Zdzisław Beksiński, Richard works primarily in pastel, acrylic, and oil, using texture and mood to create striking visual narratives. Alongside painting, photography remains an important part of his creative practice, influencing the cinematic quality found within his compositions.
Featured works in Hedgehogs in our Barefoot Way include Labourer and The Terroir — two pieces that reflect his fascination with character, atmosphere, and layered storytelling.

Experience the exhibition at FynArts Gallery until 24 May 2026. ✨

PC Janse van Rensburg paints with instinct, movement, and fearless expression.

An architect by profession and artist at heart, his work captures the fleeting nature of human experience — bold, energetic, and unapologetically alive. Each piece feels spontaneous, yet intentional, where portraiture, landscape, and imagination collide.

There’s a rawness in his work — a sense that anything can happen on the canvas.

Featured works: Tintin: The moment before a Pterodactyl ate Calvin and Hobbes, In Elon Schiele we Trust.

The title of this exhibition, drawn from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, signals a philosophy of artistic encounter shaped through dialogue with master painter and mentor Gregory Kerr.

The hedgehog, at once painful and poetic, becomes a metaphor for the demanding yet generative act of looking and painting. The works on display testify to the artists’ ability to transform shared points of departure into richly idiosyncratic outcomes, each painting bearing the mark of an individual journey rather than a uniform instruction. The paintings stand as evidence of how guidance, when offered as provocation rather than mere prescription, can empower artists to claim their own voices. The results justify the journey; works that resonate with individuality, complexity, and the courage to confront the difficult in pursuit of the poetic.

FOUR ARTISTS, FOUR TECHNIQUES — ONE CELEBRATION OF MAKING

TALITHA DEETLEFS
Metal is shaped into fluid, organic forms as hand-cut sheets of lead, copper, and aluminium are layered over sculpted bases. Some works gain permanence through traditional bronze casting.

ILSE NIEMAN
From a single sheet of paper, Ilse Nieman cuts intricate designs using stencils drawn from personal photographs — each delicate tear becoming part of the final artwork.

LAURETTE DE JAGER
Laurette de Jager transforms landscapes through layered processes: digital photomontage, charcoal studies, and finally richly textured oil paintings.

MARIKE KLEYNSCHELDT
Marike Kleynscheldt builds realistic still lifes with thin, precise layers of acrylic, turning everyday objects into quietly detailed scenes.

Four artists. Four processes. One shared dedication to craft.
