Have you visited our newly opened gallery in Aberdeen Street yet?

If not, you are missing out.

With Hermanus firmly established as one of the Western Cape’s most dynamic art destinations, now home to more than 25 galleries, Rossouw Modern continues its growth with the opening of our fourth space, Rossouw Modern LOKAAL.

The new gallery is located within Only Specials, a beautifully restored heritage building at 14 Aberdeen Street, formerly Romantiques. The space is conceived as part of a broader creative environment, surrounded by a restaurant, nursery and French and Swedish antiques. Together, these elements form a layered and inviting destination that rewards curiosity and lingering.

Rossouw Modern LOKAAL is the result of a shared vision with Daan and Joke Gonggrijp, the founders of Daan’s Bakery, Dutchies and Ficks Restaurant.

At the heart of this development is Only Specials itself, a restaurant and coffee shop with a social purpose. The project trains mentally and physically challenged members of the local community, offering meaningful work training, skills development and the opportunity for independence. For many, this work has enabled them to become the primary breadwinners in their households.

Rossouw Modern is delighted and humbled to join this initiative. Rossouw Modern LOKAAL will focus on emerging local artists, creating space for new voices while remaining in dialogue with established creatives, and reinforcing the gallery’s long-standing commitment to discovering, mentoring, and professionally advancing South African artists.

We are looking forward to meeting you soon. ✨✨

Julio Rizhi was born in 1991. He is a contemporary Zimbabwean sculptor based in Harare, known for creating dystopic, vibrant sculptures from melted discarded plastics and mesh wire.
Working out of Chinembiri Studios, his practice focuses on environmental decay, urban high-density living, and subsequent social structure. He has exhibited extensively with First Floor Gallery
Harare and at the Cape Town and FNB Johannesburg Art Fairs.

Through his works he explores the socio-ethical aspects of contemporary Zimbabwe, including
consumption, youth unemployment, addiction, and the broken promises of a better
future, associating with the "new generation" of Zimbabwean artists who highlight the
realities of urban decay.

Two recent exhibitions were a wonderful celebration of contemporary talent, drawing strong engagement and showcasing exceptional work that truly inspired visitors.

Our hearts are full after the almost poetic 'Promised Land' by Arend Louw and Clare Menck as well as the playful and fun 'Arcade Of Fanciful Dreams' by JP Meyer, Carin Dorrington and Julio Rizhi.

We thank our loyal clients and friends who shared in the excitement with us.

'Arcade Of Fanciful Dreams' is still on until Sunday 19 April.

Thank you to the Village News for covering our recent exhibition opening ' Promised Land ' TVNOverstrand.

Join us for the Opening of 'Arcade of Fanciful Dreams'
Space Curated invites invites you to a group exhibition featuring
Carin Dorrington, JP Meyer & Julio Rizhi

03–19 April 2026
Official Opening: Friday, 3 April | 5:30 PM
Canapés and drinks will be served

The opening coincides with the First Friday Artwalk.

Re-imagine the exhibition space as an arcade where the viewer is invited to step out of reality and into a fun house or “hall of games”, inviting play and engagement. It suggests a journey into a vibrant, imaginative playground where the discarded becomes divine and play is elevated to the level of myth and personal vision.

The word “ARCADE” conjures a sense of bright, kinetic energy, playfulness and visual reward which aligns beautifully with the textured wall sculptures, playful vases and totems and colourful paintings.

“FANCIFUL” implies a delight, slightly whimsical departure from the mundane and speaks directly to the exhibition’s core theme: stories of the imagination.

‘DREAMS” imply that the work is a product of the subconscious, shared space and cultural dreaming. It is where a visual dialogue happens between the familiar and the fantastical.

Join us on Saturday 21 March at 12pm at SPACE Modern for the opening of the joint exhibition 'Promised Land' - Arend Louw & Clare Menck.

“PROMISED LAND”, invariably glances into the future. Beyond its evident religious theme, it evokes a longed-for state of ultimate bliss, a desire (“hunkering” in Afrikaans!) for a place to return to, to be safe in and at peace with oneself and one’s soul’s habitat. This ultimate platonic pool of water to drift off in, without effort or pain or care, thus also alludes to a state of redemption after life’s toil. Seen in this light, Clare’s swimmers furthermore become a metaphor for the welcome release from death’s shackles, to attain a state of spiritual well-being and bliss beyond.

It is hardly surprising that not a single landscape in this exhibition by painter Clare Menck does not have water as its dominant natural feature. Water in all forms, and in so many exhilarating places found in typical South African landscapes!

Besides a consistent output of nudes and self-portraiture, Clare Menck is particularly renowned for her much loved swimmers – effortlessly floating in water. These bathers become a visual metaphor for a sense of freedom, for being at peace with one’s body and in tune with one’s natural environment. Stepping into water, being surrounded by this marvelous, life-sustaining fluid, brings some welcome relief from a sense of gravity, and feeds the soul. There is invariably an element of sensual bliss and tactile pleasure too. This includes the existential state of being alone – of experiencing aloneness – often characterized by single figures in her works.

Arend takes us on a journey through his lens with a focus on the contrasts found in this beautiful country he calls home, a Promised Land. He captures the quiet poetry of ordinary places in South Africa, the dusty roads, modest homes church steeples and solitary palms that defines much of the country’s rural heartland.

Arend’s focus in his paintings is not just to replicate them photographically, but to distill the emotional essence of these places.

With these works, Arend invites viewers to pause and reconnect with the landscape that have shaped so many South Africans – places that may appear unremarkable at first glance but reveal profound beauty under the right light. In a fast-moving world, his paintings serve as reminders of slowness, roots and the subtle magic that lingers in the familiar horizons of home.

It is with great pride and joy that we now represent Dr Esther Mahlangu.

Dr Esther Nostokana Nagiyana Nikwambi Mahlangu (b. 1935) is one of South Africa's most revered visual artists and a celebrated cultural ambassador. Internationally recognised for her bold, geometric compositions rooted in Ndebele tradition, she has carried this visual language from homestead walls to the world's leading museums and collections.

In association with her exclusive agent, The Melrose Gallery, we are honoured to present works by an artist whose career continues to unite cultural heritage with contemporary global dialogue. These works are extraordinary in presence, we encourage you to view them in person.
