👑 OPENING TOMORROW IN CAPE TOWN:

Everard Read Cape Town presents a collection of new bronze sculpture by renowned South African artist, Guy du Toit. Join the gallery from 6pm tomorrow evening for the official opening of HARELOOMS 🥂

In an age of extraordinary technological ambition, political absurdity and increasing estrangement from ourselves, Guy du Toit’s sculptures offer a welcome reminder of something rather simpler: what it means to be human.

For more than a decade, Dutoit’s hares have acted as our proxies. Curious, vulnerable, resourceful, eccentric and endlessly inventive, they inhabit the space between the animal and the human, allowing us to recognise ourselves at a slight remove. They make us laugh at our foibles while, at the same time, reminding us to cherish them.

There is humility in these works, but also mischief. Against the hubris of our age, Dutoit proposes humour—not as escape, but as a way of seeing ourselves more clearly. His hares contemplate, embrace, read, offer flowers and simply carry on: small acts that quietly affirm the value of tenderness, curiosity and connection.

Perhaps this is Dutoit’s greatest achievement. He turns us into hares so that we can see ourselves again—and invites us, with a smile, to be more human, not less?

Exhibition concludes 28 October 2026.

💐 OPENING TOMORROW IN CAPE TOWN:

COME AGAIN, a new group show by Sanell Aggenbach , Lady Skollie 🇿🇦 , Teresa Kutala firmino Erin Chaplin opens tomorrow night at 6pm at Everard Read Cape Town 🎲

‘Come Again’ takes a mischievous, critical and deliberately irreverent look at the Modernist canon. Borrowing, bending and subverting the visual languages of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, Monet and Georges Braque, the participating artists turn the familiar stories of twentieth-century art history inside out.

The artists mine Modernism for its recognisable trope — Cubist fragmentation, Rousseau’s lush jungles, bold colour, distortion and exaggerated form — and repurpose them as tools of critique. What has traditionally been presented as artistic progress becomes something more complicated: a history shaped not only by innovation, but by who was permitted to participate, who was given authority and who was left out.

For generations, women artists have too often appeared in the margins of this story: as muses, footnotes, exceptions or supporting characters. By appropriating and transforming the languages of Modernism, the artists claim authorship over a visual tradition that has historically claimed authority without them.

Exhibition concludes 28 October 2026.

📮Please DM Everard Read Cape Town for all catalogue requests for this show.

A mesmerising new collection of ceramics and paintings from 〰🔪⚱💥〰 is now on show at Everard Read Gallery until the end of October! ⚱️

LUCINDA MUDGE | Collectors
01 - 31 October 2026
📍Everard Read Johannesburg, 6 Jellicoe Avenue

The works in this exhibition emerge through accumulation, built slowly over the course of a year as individual pieces gather meaning and find their place within the whole.

For Mudge, this is particularly present in the ceramics, where the unpredictability of the kiln allows the strange to exist alongside the beautiful, the grimy alongside the polished, while the bookshelf paintings become less still lifes than inventories of a mind, assembled shelf by shelf with the same patience over time. In this sense, collecting becomes analogous to living itself: friendships are gathered and lost, families expand and contract, houses fill and eventually empty.

The collection becomes not simply an arrangement of objects, but a way of understanding a life: “gathering what matters, losing what we must, and calling what remains a life.”⁣

These landscapes have become reminders of the richness that exists in simply paying attention to the wonderful place in which we live.” - Meyer, 2026

Last chance to view in London!
If you’re in the UK, it’s your last chance to catch Phillemon Hlungwani’s brand new solo show at Everard Read London before it closes on Monday 🪾

PHILLEMON HLUNGWANI | AMUKELA LESWI U NGA NYIKIWA SWONA (Accept what you have been given)
Closes 5 October 2026
📍Everard Read London, 80 Fulham Road, South Kensington

One of South Africa’s most accomplished contemporary artists, Phillemon Hlungwani is known for his large-scale, charcoal drawings depicting scenes from rural life which powerfully convey a sense of community.

Hlungwani’s work speaks to the artist’s deep love and respect for his people and, in particular, the women, who are the life-giving force in communities across South Africa. Using proverbs as titles in his mother tongue, xiTsonga, the works communicate an essential moral idea, conveying how members of a community are sustaining the values of its people.

With this new body of work, Hlungwani revisits the rural village of his childhood. Modest and indistinguishable from so many other villages across rural Limpopo Province, it is however the wellspring of Hlungwani’s creativity, and it serves both as his muse and as a refuge to which he returns for inspiration and renewal.

As always with Hlungwani’s work, he seeks to remind us that even the poorest amongst us lead complex and rich inner lives. Hlungwani’s protagonists have dreams, hopes and aspirations. Like us all, they have experienced joy, love, loss, and deep sadness. It is these universal themes in Hlungwani’s work that touch us deeply. With a clear and unsentimental eye, the artist reveals, through the daily life of a rural village, our shared humanity and connectedness.

Currently on show at Everard Read Gallery ‘s CIRCA gallery is a wonderful series of drawings by Karel Nel - don’t miss out on the ongoing series of artist-led walkabouts to experience this exhibition through Nel’s own perspective throughout October and November!

“The complex process of drawing, for me, is a way of trying to understand, to grasp both the manifest and the ineffable. This interest in the world and its shifting paradigms has led to a lifetime of journeying, thinking, connecting with others, and always drawing. While the finished drawings are undertaken with great precision, they are also infused with the ungraspable, created by vanishing points and shifts in perspective. In Portrait of Per Wästberg, for example, the third library of his lifetime stands in for him: each coloured line, the spine of a book, represents a world that he has read and entered, as head of the Nobel Literary Committee for almost two decades. The black and white works, begun as rubbings on the pavements and columns of Paris, evoke after-images of Brancusi’s studio in Dreams and Tools, Impasse Ronsin, Paris, as well as the forest shrines of Uji and Kyoto, visited in the previous year, in Unfolding Worlds, Kyoto/Paris.
The works on this exhibition are distillations of experiences gathered from my own life’s journey, and by extension from those of others.”

PENELOPE STUTTERHEIME | A Way Through 🪽
11 September - 03 October 2026
📍Everard Read Franschhoek, 20 Huguenot Road

For Stutterheime, painting has long been a way of giving form to the interior landscape: a means of exploring the shifting terrain of memory, emotions and consciousness.

‘A Way Through’ continues this deeply personal enquiry, presenting a body of work that can be understood as a distillation of inner landscapes.

The title suggests both a forward momentum as well as possibility. We move through life along varying shifting paths of our own, but also those that are shared with others. Some paths diverge while others intersect and become woven into the fabric of who we are, transforming us as we go.

For Stutterheime, painting becomes a way of processing these continuous and inevitable shifts. Her process remains highly intuitive and physical. Oil paint is repeatedly applied, built up and worked into the surtace, each new layer recording the passage of time. The accumulated marks intricately weave together light and colour; traces of what has been experienced remain beneath, each new layer already forming what comes next. Grief, love, sadness, joy and loss leave their traces, altering the shape of what remains, but what we carry forward is never quite the same as what we started with.

In this sense, ‘A Way Through’ is concerned with resilience - not as a fixed state, but as an ongoing process of adaptation and evolution of self. The works thus become both record and refuge - containers for memories and spaces of retreat. They speak to the human capacity to find a way through this existence, always carrying what has shaped us while we continue to transtorm indefinitely.
