On the 16th of June 2026, we will be commemorating the Soweto Uprising. Soweto Uprising was a pivotal moment in struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa. The significance of the Soweto Uprising lies in its ability to inspire youth to resist any form of oppression in the Post-Colonial State.

On the 3rd of June 2026, we hosted two build up activities: The first activity was the Dumsi River Hiking to learn about the place where the Ingquza Hill Massacre occurred and also see the graveyard of those who lost their lives during the Massacre.

The second activity was a visit at Mkhambathi Nature Reserve Prison to learn about the prison that kept Mpondo Revolts Activists before they were sent to Pretoria to be executed. The Old Structure on the picture was an apartheid government prison.

Those two activities were a built up to the commemoration of Ingquza Hill Massacre that took place on the 6th of June 2026.

Yesterday at the Ingquza Hill Museum

We gathered to honor those who fell on 6 June 1960 and to remember why the Mpondo Revolt still matters 66 years on.

Ingquza Hill Museum is proud to host the upcoming commemoration of Ingquza Hill Massacre which seeks to remember the unforgotten heroes who sacrificed their lives fighting the apartheid regime in Mpondoland.

This event is not just about remembering the Mpondo heroes who lost their lives, but it is also a symbol of transformation in Post Apartheid South Africa.

The together with the convened an oversight meeting at to assess progress on infrastructure development and maintenance at the site.

The engagement focused on unpacking current plans, ongoing projects, and work completed thus far by the Museum’s Facilities and Project Management teams.

The Ingquza Hill Steering Committee also participated, raising key issues for the Department’s consideration, including staff capacity, security enhancements, infrastructure upgrades, and the preservation and promotion of amaMpondo cultural heritage.

Visit and learn the history of the Pondo Revolt and the resistance liberation struggles from the walls and exhibitions at the site.

The subjection by the Pondo People took place in the Eastern Transkei in the late 1950’s and 1960’s.
