OPEN CALL | KZNSA GALLERY 2027 EXHIBITION PROGRAMME

Welcoming spring with an open call! 🌼

KZNSA Gallery is excited to invite artists, curators, collectives, galleries, arts organisations and institutions to submit exhibition proposals for our 2027 Exhibition Programme.

We welcome proposals for solo and group exhibitions and look forward to receiving ideas that reflect the breadth of artistic practices, conversations and perspectives being developed across KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and beyond.

Some stories are carried in cloth, thread and beads, passed from one generation to the next.

Her 2025 textile work, "Isikhalo Sam", carried Azola Krweqe to the national stage as a Sasol Signiture finalist. Made using Umbhaco cloth and beadwork, the work honours the techniques she learned from paternal grandmother, celebrating the creative traditional of Black women and reflects on the unfinished promise of freedom - one by one, bead by bead.

But Azola does not keep knowledge to herself.

In the workshop featured here, she shares beadwork as a living language, learned through the hands, passed from one person to another and carried forward across generations. "Beading is a way of thinking... slow, attentive, and deeply."

Her curatorial practice carries the same spirit of listening and learning. In "Iintsimbi iyathetha", Azola works alongside umama Nokhaya Jilingisa to explore as more than adornment. It emerges as a living language and an intergenerational knowledge system carried through colour, thread, rhythm, gesture and form.

As we close Women's Month and our Women Who Create KZNSA series, we honour Azola Krweqe, Gallery Administrator at KZNSA, artist - curator and teacher.

Working primarily in beadwork, Azolas' practice engages with the histories and meanings carried within materials, challenging distinctions between Craft and Fine Art while creating space for cultural knowledge, memory and storytelling to remain in motion.

Stepping Into the Classroom: The Experience of Teen Learners in South Africa

What does it take for a young person to stay engaged in school and thrive?

From Tuesday, 1 September, KZNSA Gallery’s Park Gallery hosts π‘―π’‚π’π’ˆπ’Šπ’π’ˆ π‘©π’š 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅, a short educational exhibition presented by the Zero Dropout Campaign

Through first-hand stories from teens, images, research, data and infographics, the exhibition brings audiences closer to the realities experienced by many learners in South Africa - from academic backlogs, stigma and exclusion to violence, mental health struggles, poverty and limited access to support.

For KZNSA, the Gallery is also a space for learning, conversation and critical engagement. Exhibitions can bring the issues we encounter in classrooms, research and everyday life into a shared public space, where we can encounter them differently and learn from one another.

π‘―π’‚π’π’ˆπ’Šπ’π’ˆ π‘©π’š 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅 asks us not only to look, but to listen, reflect and engage.

What can the experiences of young people teach us about our education system? What helps a learner remain in school? Where are young people being failed? And what role can families, educators, communities and institutions play in creating different possibilities?

This is an invitation to step into the experiences of teen learners who continue to shape their futures through courage, creativity and persistence and to consider what it will take to create an education system in which more young people can thrive.

The exhibition is at KZNSA for one week only, and we encourage educators, learners, parents, researchers and members of the wider public to visit and engage.
