FINAL REMINDER | Isidlamlilo (The Fire Eater) | Tomorrow, 17 October 2026 | 10h30

Tomorrow morning, join us at KZNSA Gallery, in partnership with Empatheatre, for an important public conversation on Isidlamlilo (The Fire Eater): The (Un)making of Zenzile Maseko.

Inspired by the oral histories of women living in Durban hostels, Isidlamlilo brings into view stories often left out of South Africa's historical record. Set against the backdrop of the political violence that marked KwaZulu-Natal's transition to democracy, the production explores themes of migration, women's labour, survival, memory and resilience.

But why do these stories matter in our contemporary moment?

As South Africa marks 32 years of democracy, questions of whose histories are remembered, whose labour is recognised and whose voices are heard remain deeply relevant. In a contemporary moment shaped by persistent gender-based violence, economic inequality and displacement, Isidlamlilo invites us to reflect on how the political and social conditions of the past continue to shape women's lived experiences today.

This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from acclaimed performer Mpume Mthombeni and director Neil Coppen as they reflect on the research, histories and creative process behind this award-winning production.

Joining them in conversation will be Musa Hlatshwayo and Miranda Young-Jahangeer.

Upcoming Exhibition | UMbulumakheqe II: Sound, Story, Image | Friday, 6 November 2026

KZNSA Gallery is pleased to present UMbulumakheqe II: Sound, Story, Image, a collaboration between Ande Magoso and Mbali Malimela, featuring works by Ntobeko Chiliza, opening in our Main Gallery on Friday, 6 November 2026.

Continuing the story that began with the first UMbulumakheqe exhibition, visual artist Ande Magoso and poet and storyteller Mbali Malimela bring together painting, sound and oral storytelling in an exploration of identity, memory, lineage and belonging.

Drawing from the tradition of izinganekwane, stories passed down by elders after nightfall, the exhibition follows UMbulumakheqe, a man who exists between different worlds and whose journey unfolds through encounters shaped by love, longing, ancestral presence and transformation.

Through their collaboration, Magoso and Malimela explore the relationship between the spoken and the seen, inviting audiences to experience storytelling beyond a single medium. The exhibition also features works by Ntobeko Chiliza.

What happens when stories traditionally carried by voice enter the gallery, and when images begin to speak back?

Whose stories do we remember, and whose labour, sacrifices and contributions have been left out of the histories we tell?

This Saturday, KZNSA Gallery, in partnership with Empatheatre, invites you to a public conversation around Isidlamlilo (The Fire Eater): The (Un)making of Zenzile Maseko. Please note, this event is not the staging of the work but it is a conversation about the theatre piece.

Brought to life by acclaimed performer Mpume Mthombeni and theatre-maker Neil Coppen, this award-winning production introduces us to Zenzile Maseko, a grandmother whose life carries the complexities of South Africa's political and social history.

Through her story, Isidlamlilo opens up important conversations about women's labour, both visible and invisible, and the ways in which women have sustained families, communities and political struggles, often without recognition.

It asks us to consider how women's experiences are remembered, whose voices are given space in our collective histories, and what it means to revisit the past through the stories of those who lived it.

We are excited to bring this conversation to KZNSA Gallery and create space for reflection, dialogue and collective remembering of this incredible piece of theatre making. Mpume Mthombeni and Neil Coppen will be in discussion with Musa Hlatshwayo and Miranda Young-Jahangeer.

The KZNSA Gallery is excited to invite you to join us for the opening of two exhibitions, Marking Time by Chris de B**r and UMbulumakheqe II: Sound, Story, Image by Ande Magoso and Mbali Malimela

Park Gallery | Marking Time

In 'Marking Time', Durban artist brings together eco-prints, artist books and creative jewellery made from leaves and flowers gathered during his daily walks.

Through collecting, printing and transforming these botanical fragments, De B**r reflects on memory, introspection and the passage of time. The exhibition invites us to slow down, look more attentively at our surroundings and reconsider the significance of things we might otherwise overlook.

Main & Mezzanine Galleries | UMbulumakheqe II: Sound, Story, Image

Continuing a story that began with the first UMbulumakheqe exhibition, presented at The Chairman - Durban in 2025, visual artist Ande Magoso and poet and storyteller Mbali Malimela bring together painting, sound and oral storytelling in this second chapter.

Rooted in izinganekwane, stories traditionally shared by elders after nightfall, the exhibition follows UMbulumakheqe, a man navigating different worlds, lineages and forms of belonging. Through image and voice, the artists explore inherited knowledge, ancestral presence, love, longing and transformation, inviting us to consider what happens when stories carried across generations enter the gallery and take on new forms.

Join us as we celebrate these artists and the distinct ways their practices engage with storytelling, memory and the world around us.

CURRENT EXHIBITION | Honeymoon. The happily ever after? by Sabelo Mlangeni | UPCOMING PUBLIC PROGRAMMES

Our current exhibition, which opened on 2 October 2026, invites us to sit with the complexities of post-apartheid South Africa, looking particularly at eThekwini (Durban), a city known for its vibrancy, but also shaped by challenging socio-political realities.

What does the notion of a happily ever after mean? How do we imagine it? And, within all these complexities, is it even a reality?

Developed over five years and inspired by Mlangeni's honeymoon trip to eThekwini, 'Honeymoon. The happily ever after?' offers an intimate portrait of the city in all its glamour and decay. Through photographs of everyday encounters, moments of leisure and landscapes marked by the 2021 unrest and 2022 floods, Mlangeni asks us to consider the contradictions that shape life in contemporary South Africa.

First presented at in Cape Town in 2025, the exhibition now returns to eThekwini, the very city that inspired it, inviting local audiences to encounter and reflect on this portrait of their city.

The exhibition reminds us to look, to pause, to sit with what we see and to ask questions. It also reminds us that, amidst these complexities, people continue to live, love, find joy and show up for one another.

As the exhibition continues, we invite you to extend these reflections through two upcoming public programmes at KZNSA Gallery.

KZNSA Gallery, in partnership with Empatheatre, invites you to a thought-provoking public conversation on Isidlamlilo (The Fire Eater): The (Un)making of Zenzile Maseko.

Created by Empathreatre (Mpume Mthombeni and Neil Coppen), Isidlamlilo follows the story of Zenzile Maseko, an elderly woman forced to confront her past after discovering that the state has officially declared her deceased. Through her journey, the production explores themes of memory, identity, political violence, and resilience, offering a powerful reflection on the histories that continue to shape KwaZulu-Natal today.

Join the creators in conversation as they reflect on the method and staging of this acclaimed production and discuss the role of theatre as a space for storytelling, historical reflection, and social change. Co-moderated by Dr. Miranda Young-Jahangeer and Musa Hlatshwayo.
