Established almost 50 years ago, the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, located in a gracious old house on Montpelier Road, is one of KZN’s leading commercial art galleries. The gallery is well stocked with original works by eminent and emerging SA artists and hosts exhibitions of new works, on a regular basis. The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery offers consultations both in the home and office to give advice, an

d to cater to clients’ specific requirements. A well established framing department, specializing in conservation framing, is on hand to give ideas and advice. All framing is done on the premises to ensure strict quality control. The Gallery offers an exclusive range of handmade and handgilded frames. Quality prints are available and the Gallery will source unusual and different material to assist a client in creating a particular theme. Restoration of art works by highly trained and experienced restorers is a speciality and this work is also done on the premises. Old or damaged frames can also be restored by qualified staff.

𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿
The Karoo does not reveal itself quickly. Robert Domijan learned this over many days of travelling its back roads, gathering reference, absorbing light and distance before ever lifting a brush. That patience shows in every canvas he makes of this landscape.

Philipstown sits in the Eastern Karoo, established as a church centre on a farm once called Rietfontein, later named for Sir Philip Wodehouse, a governor of the Cape Colony. Like so many Karoo towns, its history is written plainly into its streets - wide enough for ox wagons to turn, quiet enough to hear the wind.

Look at how Robert builds this road. Broad, dusty, empty - the kind of street that has seen more silence than traffic. Simple buildings line one side, a church steeple anchors the other, and above it all, a Karoo sky doing what Karoo skies do best - taking up more space than the town itself.

There is nothing hurried in this painting. Robert's muted palette lets the light do the work, the way it actually does out there - flat, honest, unforgiving of shortcuts.

These old Karoo towns make for a particular kind of journey. You do not pass through them quickly. You slow down, whether you intend to or not. Philipstown asks the same of anyone standing before this painting.

𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀
Naïve art breaks the contract we usually make with wildlife painting. It does not ask you to believe. It asks you to imagine.

Virginia Tayengwa understands this completely. Her animals do not need to look real to feel alive. A zebra can wear yellow stripes. A giraffe can carry spots of orange and blue. Nobody is fooled, and nobody minds. This is the freedom naïve art offers - colour used for joy, not accuracy.

Look at how Virginia crowds her canvases with pattern - polka-dotted elephants, striped zebras in impossible blues, giraffes freckled like something from a dream. Every animal becomes decoration and character at once. There is no hierarchy here, no predator stalking prey. Just a shared, sunlit world where everything coexists in colour.

This is exactly why the work suits a child's space so well - a nursery, a playroom, a bedroom in a game lodge where young imaginations need somewhere to wander. Virginia's animals do not teach zoology. They teach delight.

Sometimes the truest way to see Africa's wildlife is not through realism, but through wonder.

Hussein Salim has added six new works to his popular "Part of Nature" series. And they deliver everything that made the original pieces sell so quickly - that extraordinary density of image, that insistence on pulling you deeper into the canvas the longer you look.

Hussein's journey as a refugee from Sudan has always informed his art. He sees the world as a place of connection rather than division. His canvases are conversational bridges - between cultures, between the natural world and the human one, between ancient symbols and contemporary life.

Look at these paintings. Really look.

There is no empty space. Every corner holds something - a bird, a figure, a flower, a pattern borrowed from tradition and made new. Peacocks. Butterflies. Human silhouettes. Botanical forms. These two watercolours are the last of a series. Painted by the late Lindy Acton, well known and respected botanical artist, they represent the final chapter of a body of work dedicated to South Africa's indigenous edible fruits. That alone makes them significant. What makes them extraordinary is everything else.

The Amatangulu - known to most as the Natal Plum - has been growing along our coastline long before anyone thought to paint it. An evergreen thorny shrub, its bright red berries are rich in Vitamin C, long used for jams and preserves by those who knew where to look. Lindy captures it with the precision of a scientist and the eye of an artist - the glossy leaves, the vivid berries, the cross-section revealing seeds within. Nothing is guessed at. Everything is observed.

The Coastal Red Milkwood tells a different story. Native to rocky woodland and riverine areas, its orange-red oval berries feed humans, primates and birds alike - a shared table set by nature across species and centuries. Look at how Lindy renders the cluster of berries, some ripe, some still turning. This is a plant in the act of becoming.

Botanical illustration occupies a rare space between art and science. It demands absolute fidelity to the subject while requiring the hand of an artist to bring it alive. Lindy Acton understood this completely. Her watercolours don't merely document these plants - they honour them.

The Karoo knows how to wait. It has been waiting for rain since before anyone was counting. But there are moments when the waiting is almost over. When the sky darkens from the west and the air changes and every living thing goes still.

Bruce Backhouse has painted that moment.

Look at Bruce's sky. That is not merely weather. That is consequence. Dark clouds pressing down toward the koppie with the slow inevitability of something that cannot be stopped. The light beneath - that particular Karoo light that exists nowhere else - catches the rocky outcrop with an intensity that only comes when storm and sun compete for the same sky.

The koppie stands its ground. It has stood through ten thousand such storms. Bruce's meticulous brushwork builds its surface mark by mark - each dab of paint a stone, a shadow, a year of weathering.

But it is the tension that holds you. That charged stillness between the last dry moment and the first drop. The Karoo holding its breath.
