Born in Durban in 1965 and based in Cape Town, Kate Gottgens is known for her colour-saturated and psychologically charged paintings, moving between figuration and abstraction.

Her work explores the space between memory and imagination, familiarity and estrangement, beauty and unease.

If you have pledged a Santa Shoebox, you can drop off your completed shoebox at the museum from 1 October to 6 November 2026.

Every shoebox is a thoughtful gift of care, kindness and joy, helping to make the festive season a little brighter for a child.

In Gallery 7 of "Brett Murray: WILD LIFE", the artist turns his attention inward, exploring empathy, vulnerability and the quiet complexities of life.

Created during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, these intimate animal sculptures emerged from a period of confinement, limited studio access and uncertainty. The monkeys appear suspended in moments of waiting, anxiety and reflection, their stillness inviting us to pause and consider our own experiences.
