Anne Marais is a South African sculptor whose magical ceramic sculptures weave together enchantment and social reflection. A Fellow of Ceramics Southern Africa, she has exhibited widely, from the South African Clay Awards to major auction houses. Winning the Conrad Theys Vuleka 1st Prize in 2018 was not just an accolade - it was a turning point in my journey as an artist. To have my work recognized by a distinguished panel of academics and seasoned artists was a profound affirmation, igniting within me the courage to keep pushing boundaries, keep searching for meaning, and keep exploring new terrain.

From that moment, the seed of inspiration grew into a solo exhibition at the Stellenbosch Woordfees, and eventually into a full body of work titled Die Uitgewerptes (“The Outcasts”). This project became an investigative journey into the lives of homeless Afrikaner men, confronting the harsh realities of drug addiction while seeking to illuminate their humanity and struggles with compassion and honesty.

The joy was immense when the prize-winning image found its place in Undercurrents, which opened this past Saturday and runs until the end of May. To see this seminal work alongside riveting creations by a host of exceptional South African artists is both humbling and exhilarating.

Visit the Art.b Gallery in Bellville to experience this journey - an exhibition that speaks of resilience, empathy, and the transformative power of art.

Clare Menck wears many hats - expressive painter, printmaker, collector, mother, a touch of water nymph, and an unabashed lover of cheesecake. At Kingsbridge Art we’ve had the privilege of framing hundreds of her works and selling a significant portion of her extensive oeuvre, which spans oil paintings, watercolours, prints, etchings, sculptures, and more. We love her art so deeply that we’ve even invested in pieces for our personal collection.

Clare is both collectible and prolific, with a body of work that ranges from marvellous swimmers to obscure circus performers, alongside traditional landscapes and still lifes. Today we celebrate her birthday, wishing her many more years of playful productivity - may she continue doing what she does so brilliantly.

To mark the occasion, we’re offering every customer free cheesecake and coffee. Pop in to say hello, and join us in raising a slice to Clare.

Happy Birthday, Clare! 🥳🥳

The camera obscura is an age-old scientific phenomenon: when light travels through a small opening in a darkened room an inverted image of the outside world will be projected onto the opposite wall, no smoke no mirrors, pure magic.

For the last five years we have brought our version of the camera obscura to AfrikaBurn for burners across the globe to experience it’s magic. We also used it to function as the biggest camera in Africa creating exposures using traditional black and white darkroom paper to create paper negatives which we turn into the positive images being displayed here. A big thank you to all who took part in our giant science experiment.

To access the OBSCURA magic at AfrikaBurn; say the words: “I’m here to experience the magic of the camera obscura!”

Sophie Peters’ work is vibrant, socially engaged, and community-oriented. Her linocuts carry strong emotional resonance, while her murals bring art into public spaces, making it accessible and impactful.

She bridges personal storytelling with collective South African identity, positioning her as both an artist and cultural educator.

If you’re drawn to art that combines social consciousness, expressive technique, and community involvement, Peters’ oeuvre offers a compelling blend of aesthetics and activism.

After plenty of beer‑holding, screw‑driving, sawing, drilling, and pulling, we’ve managed to construct our latest rendition of OBSCURA for AfrikaBurn 2026.

This year’s installation entitled: Reflections in the Desert, invites Burners from across the globe to step inside and experience the wonder of the camera obscura phenomenon.

Swing by and say hi if you’re in Tankwa Town from this coming Saturday, we’d love to share the magic with you!
