* EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT *

Very excited to have exhibiting with us for at the opening exhibition on Friday 6th November, 3m to 6pm at on Route 62 in Barrydale.

Book in for the weekend - there will be loads of activities, demo's and talks!

Rodney Gee is a South African artist whose practice moves between the traditions of classical painting and contemporary visual culture. Working predominantly in oils, he is drawn to the expressive possibilities of light, texture, colour and composition.

His still-life paintings explore the quiet beauty of objects and their relationship to one another, drawing inspiration from the Old Masters with impressionist painterly techniques. Through careful observation and dramatic lighting, familiar objects are transformed into atmospheric and contemplative compositions.

Gee’s broader “Gee” series takes a distinctly contemporary turn, using robots and artificial intelligence to explore questions of humanity, identity and the increasingly blurred boundary between the human and the artificial.

Based in the Western Cape, Gee has exhibited widely, with his work held in private collections locally and internationally.

Calvin Murphy dropped off a new painting - the beautiful old Barrydale church in the background isn't the focal point though - the quiet gentleman sweeping the road is.

Anton runs the iconic book shop in town, but takes it upon himself to pick up litter and sweep the streets when a busy day quietens down and less people are around to witness his selflessness.

Sometimes art tells a story, and sometimes it records special moments in history that would otherwise be forgotten.

Available at ArtySan gallery on Route62 in Barrydale, South Africa.

Most people don't regret buying art... they regret *how* they bought it.

I've had so many conversations in the gallery and studio, especially with first time art buyers on this topic. In fact not too long ago I had a young couple who bought their first home and were very excited about buying paintings - they didn't even know what a COA was.

Buying your first original painting is exciting, but it's also surprisingly easy to make an expensive mistake.

Should you buy what you love, or what might increase in value?

How do you know if you're paying a fair price?

What should you ask an artist or gallery before you commit?

And what small details do experienced collectors always check that first-time buyers often overlook?

I've put together an article covering 21 of the most common mistakes first-time art buyers make. This isn't to make buying art more complicated, but to help you buy with confidence and enjoy your artwork for years to come.

If you're thinking about buying your very first painting or adding to an existing collection, these simple insights could save you time, money and disappointment.

I'd love to know what mistakes you think people make most often when buying art - or if you've ever gone through this learning curve?

KAROO ART ADVANCE (men aged 21+ only)

How about we milk a cow by hand, then sketch the animals?

This isn't just another art retreat - it's an experience.

You're not just going to sit around a table drawing & painting in some sterile studio, you're going to LIVE it. Learn how to drive a tractor, feel the mud under your boots - you're experiencing the land before you draw or paint it.

At the heart of a man is a tribal member - we would walk in silence when we went out to hunt so we wouldn't attract predators and scare away the prey. We'd find our target, work as a team and experience the action and adrenalin of taking the beast down. Quietly we'd return to base and provide for our kin - feast, drink and celebrate.

In the same way, we experience the action of a working Karoo farm, we quiet our minds with sketching & painting, we celebrate with feast & drink.

Observation - Action - Celebration
..THIS is the Art Advance - because in this modern world where technology competes for your attention and your soul, men don't retreat.

Enjoy world class brandy and wh***ey, flame grilled sirloin steaks, local charcuterie & artisanal desserts in stunning accommodation on a scenic, working Karoo farm. Everything is included in one package, you just have to pitch up with your clothes.

Limited to 6 men per weekend, arrive Friday afternoon, leave Sunday afternoon.

No experience required.

"Let the magic flow"
30cm (w) x 30cm (h)
Acrylic & UV on canvas
Available for purchase

Winter in South Africa is a wonderful time to capture dramatic scenes in nature. Inspired by camping trips between the cederberg, citrusdal and kromrivier areas up to Barrydale in the Karoo - I have no shortage of inspiration.

(Frame is indicative, and quoted separately)

.. it's those quiet moments in nature when the bustle in your brain is shut down, and instead the river flows through your toes, the breeze ruffles your hair playfully letting your thoughts drift and calm be restored.

Framed or unframed - does this work transport you away from the madness, and toward tranquility?

We asked artist, Rolene Yeatman about this painting:

"Wild dogs have always been my favorite animals to paint. I’ve painted many over the years, and they are always a favorite with collectors. But this particular piece, "SPLASH", caught my eye simply because of the incredible color contrast.

It isn't your generic pose or typical wildlife action shot. The original photo was taken by Carolyn Greathead of Greathead Photography (who kindly gave me permission to use it as a reference). While the photo had a whole pack of dogs prancing in the water, I chose to focus entirely on this one dog as the central focal point.

The water was a beautiful, bright blue, rather than the muddy greens we're so used to seeing. The yellow tones in the dog's fur contrast beautifully with that vivid blue and the crisp white splashes of the churned-up water."
