The exhibition Five Hundred Years Beneath the Five-Element Mountain is based on an episode from Journey to the West, in which Sun Wukong is confined beneath the mountain. TSAI Wei-Ting removed from its original narrative of punishment and captivity, the scene is reconfigured as a metaphor for solitude—understood as both a temporal experience and an internal condition. Through enforced stillness and prolonged introspection, the work examines how perception, imagination, and self-dialogue emerge within isolation. In this sense, stillness is not only a constraint, but also a process through which inner experience gradually unfolds.
Plants serve as the central motif, symbolizing continuous growth and the circulation of inner energy. Through potted plants, foliage, and creeping forms, the work constructs a self-generating visual system, suggesting that solitude is not a state of lack, but a field of internal abundance. The concept of the Five Elements is translated into a compositional logic of color and rock formations, forming both a system of classification and a relational structure that introduces movement within stillness. By juxtaposing everyday scenes with mythological references, the work transforms “being beneath the mountain” from a physical constraint into a psychological condition.
Rather than a narrative of escape or liberation, the exhibition reconsiders stasis itself. When external action is suspended, the inner world unfolds in its complexity and depth. Solitude thus becomes not only an inevitable condition of contemporary life, but also a potential pathway toward inner richness—a mode of existence in which stillness remains generative.
