This is an old view of Karlsplatz/Stachus and the first Protestant church, Matthäuskirche, Munich, which unfortunately was demolished in 1939. The Church was built by King Ludwig I., mainly because his stepmother Friederike Karoline Wilhelmine, as well as his wife Therese, were devout protestants and wanted a church of their own faith.
By the way, Ludwig I. not only build a church for his wife, on occasion of their marriage in 1810 they celebrated with festivities, horse races and parades, which soon became a yearly tradition that we know today as Oktoberfest 💙🤍🎡🎠🥨🍺🍗🎺🎢.
You can admire and buy this and other selected views of Munich and Bavaria in our current exhibition until Oct 14th.
We are happy to welcome you during our opening hours (monday-thursday 1-6 pm) or by appointment!
