Biography
Michael Campbell grew up in Los Angeles where he learned to paint the rolling hills and orange groves of Southern California. He traveled to France at an early age to further develop his artistic talent. Noticed by a prominent French Gallery owner, Campbell was introduced to the thriving artistic community of Paris. He presented his oil, watercolors and pen and ink washes in galleries throughout the city; including the Galerie Cambaceres and Boulevard Exhibitions. He also exhibited in Orleans' Galerie D'Art and the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
After four years of painting architecture and landscapes throughout Europe, Campbell returned to Southern California and established a studio in Laguna Beach, Ca. Heeding the call to expand his horizons, Campbell was drawn to the subtle rain washed landscape of the Pacific Northwest. He made the move to the majestic Oregon Coast and spent several years working from his studio there.
While visiting the Southwest, Campbell found the raw rugged yet serene beauty of the vistas irresistible. His journey has now led him to his present Northern New Mexico location where he lives and works from his studio in Placitas, New Mexico.
With much of his life spent in beautiful parts of the world, Campbell's paintings express the universal essence of nature. His paintings emerge from imagination and memory. Powerful skies set the mood for each painting, like the first chapter in a novel. The result is a dramatic natural scene that feels strangely familiar; no matter what part of the world one calls home.
