Louie and Emmett are seasoned veterans of the BARK ranger task force of Hyde Park, NY. Their primary duty is to patrol the coast of Bard Rock yipping warnings at passing boats and driftwood!

This adventurous pair demand that you visit the Vanderbilt Mansion tomorrow between 9 AM and 12 PM to meet Ranger Abby at the BARK Ranger pop-up. Treats and BARK ranger goodies will be available, and if your pup doesn't have one already, they can earn a badge and membership card!

At the Vanderbilt Mansion, minor construction work involving water lines is occurring this Wednesday and Thursday, so there may be some noise and movement of machinery near the visitor center for a while. Ranger Abby will be stationed between the visitor center and the mansion in a shady spot away from the bustle.

We're excited to see you bright and early tomorrow, BARK cadets, and never forgot the four rules a BARK Ranger lives by:

World War II Across America’s National Parks: An Introduction

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, we embrace the story of America from our founding to today. National parks help preserve many chapters of that story, including one of the most defining events of the 20th century: World War II. Sixteen million Americans served under arms, more than 400,000 were killed, and countless millions more supported the war effort at home. The war touched every part of American society, and little was left unchanged—including national parks.

For the next 16 weeks, leading up to the 85th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the National Park Service will take you across the country to explore America's experience in World War II through the lens of national parks. These sites preserve different parts of America's wartime story, including both triumphs and tragedies. This list of parks is by no means exclusive, nor are the stories that will be shared. They represent just a fraction of the war's impact on our parks and the nation, with many of those impacts still felt today.

To follow the series, use . Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, a new park will share its story and point you to the next stop in the journey.

Meet Naomi: the world's laziest BARK Ranger! Her hobbies are sleeping and catching some Z's! She's still a little dog, though, and little dogs love to walk about in nature (even if rest is their top priority)! Naomi enjoys the walk around the Vanderbilt Mansion because the grounds are so spacious with sunny and shady viewpoints depending on the day's lounging preferences. ☀️🐕

By the way, if your pooch is itching to grab that snazzy BARK Ranger badge that Naomi is wearing, bring them by the Vanderbilt Mansion on Wednesday, August 26, from 9 AM through 12 PM! To celebrate National Dog Day and National Park Week, Ranger Abby is setting up a BARK Ranger station outside the Pavilion Visitor Center with treats, badges, licenses, and a few more goodies!

You may have noticed the feline intruder in our photos! That's Walnut: Naomi's sidekick and honorary BARK Ranger! Many people don't realize, but the BARK Ranger program accepts all furry friends on a leash (who of course follow the rules and don't require a permit). On this special occasion, show us a picture of your beloved pet, and we'll be happy to give you up to one extra badge!

The turnout for the annual West Point Band concert at the Vanderbilt Mansion was the largest we've seen in nearly six years! To everyone that attended, we sincerely thank you on behalf of all the National Park Service staff and West Point personnel who strove to make the celebratory evening a success.

Furthermore, we must extend our gratitude to the local workers who year-in and year-out ensure that these summer events run smoothly. The town of Hyde Park's Recreation Department co-hosts these events with us while the Hyde Park Police and Fire Departments work on the ground with our rangers to assist visitors. The involvement of these local service people and volunteers are indispensable. Let's see if we can double the attendance for 2027!

The 2026 performance of the West Point Band at the Vanderbilt Mansion was sensational! This year's theme was "Summer Celebration" highlighting cheerful, upbeat tunes from pop culture and the American songbook. For those that attended, the night was unforgettable, and we've added five clips of the concert's musical highlights to relive the experience. We're looking forward to the return of these talented performers next year!

At the Vanderbilt Mansion, we're excited to host the West Point Concert Band for their Summer Celebration program on Wednesday, August 12, 2026! Led by reputable conductor Maj. Philip Tappan, the West Point Band will celebrate the timeless music of the United States alongside interpretations of modern hits! Please come and enjoy spectacular music against the backdrop of the iconic Hyde Park mansion and Hudson River.

Here are a few guidelines to help you better enjoy the experience:
• The concert is completely FREE and takes place on the front lawn of the mansion.
• Start time is now 6:30 PM.
• Concert length can be between 1 and 1.5 hours.
• The Visitor Center will be closed after 4 PM.
• There will be portable restrooms outside of the Visitor Center.
• No food or drink is sold on site.
• Bring plenty of water because it can be warm in the evening.
• Come early for better parking.
• Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers.
• Remember to always clean up and leave the area as you found it.
• Look in this post's comments for this year's program setlist.

In the event of rain or unforeseen circumstances, the concert may be rescheduled to August 13. Updates will be posted to this page, if necessary.

How do you lead a nation through the end of a world war while also trying to build a lasting peace?

This month at Parks & Pages, we’ll be exploring that question as we discuss “The Last 100 Days: FDR at War and at Peace” by David Woolner. The book examines Franklin Roosevelt’s final months in office and the decisions that helped shape the postwar world.

We’re especially excited that David Woolner will be joining us virtually for the discussion, giving participants the opportunity to hear directly from the author and ask questions about his research. A leading scholar of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the president of the Roosevelt Institute, Woolner has written extensively about FDR’s leadership and legacy.

Whether you’ve finished the book, are just getting started, or are simply interested in history, we’d love to have you join us. You don’t have to read the book to enjoy the conversation.

Happy Independence Day weekend! The National Historic Sites of Hyde Park, NY (and all U.S. national parks) are celebrating the 250th Anniversary of American Independence with three fee-free days!

Enjoy a FREE tour of Hyde Park's three magnificent, federally preserved homes on July 3, 4, and 5! This includes the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Vanderbilt Mansion, and Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill. You can visit one site, or you can visit them all! Just be sure to check in to our visitor centers first to acquire a ticket, and you're all set for an unforgettable experience.

On July 4, we are also hosting a Naturalization Ceremony on the front lawn of the Home of FDR! Candidates will recite the Oath of Allegiance and be officially made citizens. If you happen to be here on Independence Day, feel free to respectfully observe this time-honored ceremony.
