“The FOFA team has been thinking about the mantra, ‘There’s no such thing as an art emergency.’ Yet, we feel a constant need to produce and overwork,” says Curator-in-residence María Escalona. “When trying to fulfill unsustainable expectations, it is hard to respect our bodies, minds and nature’s cycles.”

𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 | 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄 𝐄𝐍 𝐕𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐄

𝐊𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐫 is an artist and poet of Guinean and Quebecois origins, whose work combines text, textiles and drawing. She sees her practice as a way of mending the holes and cracks in her history, generating new memories. She has exhibited her work and completed artist residencies in Quebec and abroad (Centre Canadien d'Architecture, CICA Museum, The Studios at MASS MoCA, Galerie FOFA, CIRCA Art Actuel, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, Spazio eLaSTiCo, ARTCH 2022). In 2021, she embroidered illustrations for the book 𝘌𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘰𝘺𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘴, written by Lula Carballo and Catherine Anne Laranjo, published by Editions Dent-de-lion. Her poems and embroideries will be presented at FIL (Festival international de la littérature) in autumn 2023.

Saulnier's exhibition 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘍𝘪𝘭 '𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 is on view in the York Vitrines until December 15th, 2023.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐄𝐚𝐠𝐥𝐞 (b. 1988, Boston, MA, USA) is an American video and installation artist based in Montreal. Pulling intuitively from the world of pop-culture, the Internet and technology industries, her work explores the legacy of Western philosophy and science from a feminist perspective. Most recently her major projects have been animation-based and focus on how practices of observation, description, and representation in Western art and science have formulated a concept of nature amenable to industrialization, colonialism and spectacle.

Recently, her work has been exhibited at Projet Pangée, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, The Canadian Centre for Architecture, Eastern Bloc, Critical Distance, the University of Kentucky Art Museum, as well as Centre Clark, Studio XX, Leonard & Bina Ellen Gallery, and Saw Video Media Centre.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐄𝐚𝐠𝐥𝐞 (née en 1988 à Boston, MA, États-Unis) est une artiste vidéo et installatrice américaine basée à Montréal. S'inspirant intuitivement du monde de la culture pop, de l'Internet et des industries technologiques, son travail explore l'héritage de la philosophie et de la science occidentales d'un point de vue féministe. Plus récemment, ses projets principaux ont été axés sur l'animation et se penchent sur la façon dont les pratiques d'observation, de description et de représentation dans l'art et la science occidentaux ont formulé un concept de la nature adapté à l'industrialisation, au colonialisme et au spectacle.
