24/06/2025

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and the reunification of Vietnam (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025), many international press delegations had come to report. Among them, we were honored to coordinate with Foreign Press Center to prepare and give press guidance for 03 delegations: VRT NWS , Belgium; Sky News, UK; and ABC News , Australia.
For the success of the reports, we would like to sincerely thank:
+ Central and Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Affairs Security
+ Central and Ho Chi Minh City Association of Victims of Dioxin
+ War Remnants Museum
+ Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Site
+ DONY Garment Company
+ Economic Expert Huynh Thanh Dien
And many other organizations and individuals who helped us!

Through the difficulties of the project: preparation time was quite urgent, a lot of information needed to be processed; reporters had a long Easter break; Ho Chi Minh City often had road closures and traffic jams due to the holiday),
there were also interesting experiences: living in a celebrating atmosphere; the optimism about the future of the country; appreciating the care and love that Belgium people have been giving to Agent Orange victims in Vietnam; the opportunity to work and prepare for 3 teams at the same time.

Finally, the videos in NESCAFÉs Sustainability series are on YouTube and Nescafe website.

The memories from the preparation 2 months before the crew arrived, the days of surveying the Nescafe Tri An factory, D**g Nai and the coffee gardens in Ea Tieu, Dak Lak, and then the filming days (December 5-15, 2023) are endless.

The joy of meeting and working with the people who contributed to creating the famous Nescafe coffee brand is endless. From the agricultural expert - Mr. Thong; the coffee garden owners: Mr. Sam, Ms. Nhung, Ms. Lien, to the engineers and technicians at the factory: Ms. Lan, Ms. Nhi, Mr. Tu Anh, Mr. Quang, Mr. Nhat; and the others, although not appearing in the video but indispensable to the success of the filming trip: Mr. Phung, Ms. Tram.

Also, thank you for the help of the Foreign Press Center & Mr. Long, and the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Dak Lak and D**g Nai.

Thank you for the enthusiastic and responsible work of the lighting & sound technical team & DIT: Mr. Hau, Mr. Quang, Mr. Tinh, Mr. Thi, Mr. Hy, Mr. Trung and Mr. Tho.

Thank you for the experience of working with NESCAFÉ Global (Pam & Matt), Publicis Groupe (Shane, Valeria, Bianca & Matt C), and Bouch Creative (Matt B, Matt W, Ramon, Simon, Kevin).

In particular, this is the first time Nescafe Global has come to another country to film, because before, only the offices in other countries filmed and sent it back to the headquarters. According to Mr. Phung, it was also the first time Nescafe Tri An Factory welcomed a film crew for 4 days, because other crews only filmed for a few hours and then returned.

In this project, Nescafe wants to express the message of sustainable development through: regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and reuse of materials and resources.

It was a windy and cold morning when we interviewed Vu Hoang Viet at Hai Ly ruined church, Nam Dinh.

(Producer) Caroline found a drawing of the church on the website artistviet.com, and the name of the artist (V. H. Viet), but wasn’t able to contact the artist. I helped her to find the artist. I had tried various ways, include calling the admin of the website artistviet.com but it didn’t work. The admin said the website is an open forum which registered members can post their works, and Viet didn’t register his phone number. I then tried to join Facebook group “Artist Viet” and tried to search name of the artist among the members, then sent message to people whose names matched, and luckily, I found him by that way.

That morning, Hai’s mother also went with him and she brought for us lots of “xiu pao” – a delicious traditional dessert of Nam Dinh province.

To answer the question of “when did you draw that painting and why?”, Hai said: “I drew it 2 years ago, at that time I was young and lonely. When I saw the church, I felt that I can relate to it: it was also lonely, and same with me, fighting with the wave and the wind of life”

The film was produced by ELEPHANT for ARTE channel.

The experience working with Spot Studio, USA and MiTek is one of the great experiences that I’ll forever treasure. Spot Studio team and MiTek people are one of the coolest people I’ve met. Everyone is so kind, sweet and friendly.

MiTek office in D7, HCMC is one of the cleanest and most beautiful offices I’ve been to. During the 2 short days visiting and filming at that office, I saw a General Manager picked up a small trash on the floor (instead of asking a staff to do it), and CEO of Global MiTek held the elevator for everyone.

Mr. Mark Thom – MiTek’s CEO is one of the coolest CEOs I’ve met. In such a short visit, he tried his best to make everyone feel appreciated, included and matter. Despite his busy schedule, a lot of people and events occupied his attention, and despite me being someone he would meet in less than 2 days, he had the time and care to ask me to tell him my brief life story.

Filming of making fried sticky rice ball.
Fried sticky rice ball is an interesting dish that is unique to the Mekong Delta area in Vietnam.
It requires special skills from selecting sticky rice, cooking, beating the rice.
The chef needs to have a lot of strength and fast to be able to make the fried sticky rice round as a ball.
The stove need to be gas stove, it would be harder to make it work with electric stove.

The ball is mostly empty inside and it's more for artistic purpose.
This is usually eaten with roasted chicken.

Foreign Press Center gave connection to arrange a chef from Tien Giang area to make a dish like this for us to film for international television.

It was a winter morning in Hanoi when we interviewed Pham Viet Hai – team member of a page about Vietnamese history about The Great Hanoi Rat Massacre in 1902.

Hai worked at a bank but researched about history in his free time as a hobby. It was his first time to be interviewed by television and he tried his best to prepare. He was nervous in the beginning but gained confidence later.

The Great Hanoi Rat Massacre in 1902 was a real life story under the French colonization that was so hilarious that I had to tell Caroline Halazy – producer to give me a minute to laugh before I can translate Hai’s answer to her. Even our driver was standing there listening to us also laughed.

Places of interviewing: Hanoi Opera House and French-style villas at West Lake.

To be able to find this interviewee, I’ve researched about “The Great Hanoi Rat Massacre of 1902” online and had found Hai as a team member of the page “Tư duy lịch sử”.

The story was broadcasted on arte channel as part of "Invitation au voyage"

Filming Singaporean actor/ TV host Darren Lim making cassava and coconut milk then serve for children and members at Danang Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Da Nang, Vietnam.

As part of War Time food documentary, Darren experimented making a dish from an ingredient that was popular during war time in Vietnam: cassava.
Together with the caregivers at Danang Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (https://vavadanang.org.vn/), Darren made the dish of cassava and coconut milk and served the children at the center.

It created a meaningful time for everyone at the Center. Director of the Center said that it tasted very good, and he had eaten cassava many times but haven't eaten that dish before.

Film permission with the Center was made by Foreign Press Center, Vietnam.
