Our friends across Wick Avenue.

A Winslow Homer masterpiece, a Norman Rockwell portrait of Lincoln, and an Albert Bierstadt vision of the Oregon Trail all hang under one roof in Youngstown, Ohio, and it costs nothing to see them. The Butler Institute of American Art opened in 1919 as the first museum in the United States built specifically to house a collection of American art. Industrialist Joseph G. Butler, Jr. commissioned the firm McKim, Mead & White to design it, and the resulting Italian Renaissance Revival building sits on the National Register of Historic Places.

Inside, the holdings top 20,000 works, ranging from early American portraiture to Abstract Expressionism, with a significant group of paintings by Robert Motherwell and work by Mary Cassatt. Homer's Snap the Whip is the signature draw, and William Gropper's Youngstown Strike ties the collection to the valley's own industrial story. Later additions broadened the experience: the Beecher Center, built with Youngstown State University, focuses on art and technology, while the Andrews Pavilion adds a sculpture atrium, gift shop and café. Known nationally as America's Museum, the Butler has operated without an admission charge since it opened. Have you visited the Butler Institute of American Art?
