DID YOU KNOW? 🤔
Before highways, airports and modern transportation, immigrants arriving in Texas often came by ship.
One of the most important ports for immigrants entering western Texas was Indianola, located on Matagorda Bay.
German immigrants began arriving there in the 1840s, and Indianola eventually became a major gateway for European and American immigrants settling in western Texas.

🏛️ WHAT IS INDIANOLA?
Long before highways connected our Texas communities, ships arrived along the Texas coast carrying people from around the world hoping to build a new life.
One of those important coastal communities was Indianola — once a bustling port on Matagorda Bay and a major gateway for immigrants coming to Texas from Europe.
At its height, Indianola was one of the most important ports in Texas. Thousands of immigrants passed through its streets, bringing with them their hopes, traditions, skills, and dreams of a new life in Texas.
But Indianola’s story is also one of hardship and resilience. The town was devastated by powerful hurricanes, and eventually disappeared as a major Texas community.
So why does Indianola matter to us today?
Because the people who came through places like Indianola helped shape the communities, families, and culture of Texas — including South Texas.
📜 This October, the Yorktown Historical Museum will host the traveling exhibit “Indianola – Mother of Texas: Immigration from Europe to Texas.”
Come discover the fascinating story of the people, places, and journeys that helped build Texas.
