Okay this one got me. Yorktown has a museum on the top floor of a town building, it is completely free, and it turned 60 this month.

It opened in August 1966 with 115 objects that 15 people in town simply handed over. Chairs, tables, books, flags, maps. By that December, 39 donors had pushed it to 352. Today the collection is past 10,000. Nobody built this with a big endowment. Yorktown just kept giving it stuff for sixty years straight.

My favorite part is that the rooms point at real places you can still go stand in front of. There is an entire room rebuilding the Yorktown Depot around 1950, and the actual 1877 depot is still there in Railroad Park on the same street, restored in 2020. The museum's first two rooms were inside the Davenport House, a 1750 farmhouse on Croton Heights Road that served as a Continental Army command post.

There is also a dollhouse with 8,000 hand cut clapboards, which is a sentence I genuinely did not expect to type today.

Now tell me the small Westchester museum nobody talks about that you would drive to on a random Tuesday. I will go. (link in comments)

Hey Yorktown kids! This week at the museum, you can visit our Farm Room and see what tools were used by farmers a long time ago. Enjoy making a craft of some animals that were so important to the farming families.

Happy Birthday to us! We are turning 60!
The museum started out as a plan to fundraise and save a local historic home, the Davenport House. Over the years and at various locations, we created exhibits and programs that were engaging and informative for the Yorktown community. We proudly continue the work, to ensure that the museum is available as a resource for this town which is so rich in history. Thanks for supporting us all these years and come in to visit to see what makes us so special.

Hey Yorktown kids! This week at the museum we will be making a Cup and Ball craft to take home. This was a game of skill that children played in the past, and it's still fun today. Are you up for the challenge?

Ossining High School students visited today, and we had so much FUN! Bright, happy, and ready to learn about history. We ended the tours with an activity of patterned bracelet making. Their smiling faces are the best part of this job!

The Model Train Workshop was a hit! Our train expert Nick taught electrical wiring and painting and even tips on weathering the paint finish for a more realistic look. A good time was had by all! Looking forward to the next workshop in August.
