It's National Police Week!
The Office of York County Sheriff was established in 1870, making it the oldest continuously active law enforcement agency in the County, now in its 156th year. The early town of York was initially served by a Town Marshal beginning in 1875. As the community gradually grew to became a City, the agency evolved into a Police Department by the 1880's. Similarly, Henderson started with a Town Marshal before eventually forming a Police Department.
Presently, aside from the Cities of York and Henderson, the County's outlying communities are served by the York County Sheriff's Office, but in the early days of York County that approach was just not practical. Particularly in the days before good roads and motorized vehicles made getting around relatively easy, having some degree of local peace officer protection right in your community was valuable because otherwise it might require a miles-long trip on horseback just to let the Sheriff or a deputy know they were needed in the first place! Responses then were measured in hours, not minutes.
Early newspaper accounts referenced through online searches suggest that Benedict, Bradshaw, Lushton, McCool Junction, Poston (Gresham), and Waco also had Town Marshals, and other settlements and areas in the county may have had Precinct Constables. Any town with trains running through would often have some degree of law enforcement attention provided by the railroad companies for their security as well.
The Historical Association would like to add to its very small collection of peace officer and law enforcement history collection for the County, which presently only has material on the York City Police Department. If you have stories to share, or photos that we would be permitted to obtain copies of, please reach out. The photos we are sharing today are courtesy of a generous donation from retired YPD officer Roger Wolfe.
With this week's approval of the levy override to provide funding, we are exploring the possibility of obtaining a scanner capable of converting our collection of newspapers (hard copies and microfilm) going back over 130 years into a format that is fully searchable. There's so much information in them presently only discoverable by going through them a page at a time. Imagine how much more information we could have pulled for Police Week with that investment!
Today, the York County Sheriff's Office is served by 14 sworn personnel, the City of York Police Department is served by 17 sworn officers, and the City of Henderson is served by one full time sworn officer. All of today's agencies frequently work cooperatively together, and are aided by Troop C of the Nebraska State Patrol from time to time as needed.
Law enforcement is a difficult and often thankless job. This week we make it a point to appreciate those who serve, and for us here at the Historical Association, to keep and build on their history.
