YORK – Last week, a reader asked about the location of the cornerstone from York County’s historic courthouse. As the reader recalled, years ago there was a story written regarding speculation it had been found among property at the county roads department. Since that time, there has been no men...

What's your story Wednesday- The Magic of Flowers

Years ago, we were hit by the "Spring fever bug" where the only cure was to take a day trip. We often left home in the early morning with no particular place to go; but let nature take the lead while we just enjoyed the ride. That day, flowering trees were filled with rose-colored blossoms, spring bulbs splashed color around houses, and calves lounged on dark green grass under a brilliant Blue sky dotted with fluffy white clouds. As the miles slipped by, we changed course and ended up at my parents house. We visited in their sunroom while watching a garter snake lounge on the step by the open door. It was such a pleasant way to spend the day.

Before leaving, we looked at Dad's cornfield admiring. The tiny leaves springing up through the soil. That's when I caught a whiff of Lily-of-the- valley, I intuitively knew that I had a small bouquet to take home. Wading through the hydrangeas on the corner of the front porch. I soon had a handful of the quaking bell-shaped blossoms. Dad was saying his final goodbye as I split the bouquet in half telling him to give Mom a bouquet too. You could see the years magically erased as he once again became her bashful suitor. As we drove out of the yard, I could see him handing the nose gay to her, they were both smiling. It's a wonderful memory that I still carry today.

Is your memory jogged to another place in time when you see a row of blooming lilacs or inhale the scent of a freshly tilled field? It's important that you share these memories because they are a tiny part of your life story. To see photos, books, or memorabilia that may magically ease years. Visit the York County Historical Association on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9:00 until 12:00. You'll be glad you did.

A few pictures from the old YMS captured this week.

All of us have our stories and memories. Our great stories and our painful ones coalesce into defining our character and values, who we became, and how we influence and pass along what is ideally the best parts of what we learned for future generations, through our own children or as mentors and role models for others who come into our lives. For most of us north of 40 or 50, way down inside we are still about 17 years old, wondering when and how it is that our bodies abruptly got older and the years went by so fast.

Your stories have value. They should be told and remembered. What are some stories that these photos bring back for you? What are the names you remember? Keeping those stories alive is what drives us at the YCHA, and we hope you'll share here for others to read, and maybe those will rekindle even more shared memories in others.

It's National Police Week!

The Office of York County Sheriff was established in 1870, making it the oldest continuously active law enforcement agency in the County, now in its 156th year. The early town of York was initially served by a Town Marshal beginning in 1875. As the community gradually grew to became a City, the agency evolved into a Police Department by the 1880's. Similarly, Henderson started with a Town Marshal before eventually forming a Police Department.

Presently, aside from the Cities of York and Henderson, the County's outlying communities are served by the York County Sheriff's Office, but in the early days of York County that approach was just not practical. Particularly in the days before good roads and motorized vehicles made getting around relatively easy, having some degree of local peace officer protection right in your community was valuable because otherwise it might require a miles-long trip on horseback just to let the Sheriff or a deputy know they were needed in the first place! Responses then were measured in hours, not minutes.

Early newspaper accounts referenced through online searches suggest that Benedict, Bradshaw, Lushton, McCool Junction, Poston (Gresham), and Waco also had Town Marshals, and other settlements and areas in the county may have had Precinct Constables. Any town with trains running through would often have some degree of law enforcement attention provided by the railroad companies for their security as well.

The Historical Association would like to add to its very small collection of peace officer and law enforcement history collection for the County, which presently only has material on the York City Police Department. If you have stories to share, or photos that we would be permitted to obtain copies of, please reach out. The photos we are sharing today are courtesy of a generous donation from retired YPD officer Roger Wolfe.

With this week's approval of the levy override to provide funding, we are exploring the possibility of obtaining a scanner capable of converting our collection of newspapers (hard copies and microfilm) going back over 130 years into a format that is fully searchable. There's so much information in them presently only discoverable by going through them a page at a time. Imagine how much more information we could have pulled for Police Week with that investment!

Today, the York County Sheriff's Office is served by 14 sworn personnel, the City of York Police Department is served by 17 sworn officers, and the City of Henderson is served by one full time sworn officer. All of today's agencies frequently work cooperatively together, and are aided by Troop C of the Nebraska State Patrol from time to time as needed.

Law enforcement is a difficult and often thankless job. This week we make it a point to appreciate those who serve, and for us here at the Historical Association, to keep and build on their history.
