In the early 1900s, Black students in York had only two schools to attend, and both were underfunded, leaving them without the same resources their white peers had. Quality childcare was even harder to find. Crispus Attucks York stepped in and opened its own preschool, with no government funding behind it, just community will and vision.

The woman behind it all was Mrs. Helen Thackston, who poured her heart into shaping young minds and instilling pride in every child she taught.
