We are so glad to be joined by Nancy Davidson, curator of Critters and formerly of the Maine Jewish Museum . Nancy will be with us Saturday afternoons 2-4pm to answer your questions about the show, the artists, and everything in between!

Madge has recently published a gorgeous book on the history and how-to of cyanotype, “Printing with the Sun.” If you are at all curious about this super fun medium we highly recommend it! With a background in carpentry and furniture design, Trevor builds his work with exquisite attention to detail. His recent pieces employ new techniques that expand on the illusionistic quality of his earlier work. Floor to Sky confuses perspective with false painted shadows, shallow carving, and woodgrain veneer applied directionally. Others in the collection further incorporate meticulously painted color gradients. These deceptive pieces are some of my favorites to install. They encourage close observation, delightful
conversation, and the occasional friendly argument over what is real and what is not.

Sarah’s paintings have a unique language, stylized but remarkably honest, each with its own distinct story to tell. When I first visited her studio in Stockton Springs several years ago (my first trip to that area) I was delighted to find that the shapes of light, land, and clouds in Penobscot Bay matched her paintings exactly. In White Roses I love the push and pull between flattened and receding space, and the playful patterning of flowers that belies their considered arrangement. Sarah is a master at conveying a lot with a little and she and her work are very similar; thoughtful, serene, precise, and so very lovely to spend time with.

A master gardener and caretaker of things and people, Sarah takes an enchanting approach to painting the garden. Under the Lilac in Spring gives us a cross-section of earth brimming with all the many things one could find there. Worms, grubs, moles, and beetles weave through buried stones and root systems in a cheerful cacophony that seems to get busier each time I look. At first glance this series feels like a departure from her recent tablescape paintings, but really it shows us a different side of that same world. We see the roots and buds of flowers before they are cut and placed as a centerpiece; the earthworms aerating the soil where the food will grow; and shoots and tubers of plants that will become part of the meal on the plate. I love Sarah’s nonhierarchical descriptions, and her ability to elevate and celebrate what is right in front of us.
