"Nature" by Kevin McDowell
Acrylic on canvas
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

If one were to ask what type of artist Kevin McDowell considers himself, he would say that he is an "Eclectic- Visualizer". This is because as an artist he's always looking for new discovery and his work style is diverse from a contemporary- modern to a digital tech style. He feels that artists like musicians become categorized because it is easier for someone to market and package what they do. However, he remains true to his artistic voice governed by his passion and inspiration of color and movement. He places value on creating holistic images of the African/Latino-Caribbean diaspora with universal themes of family, community and relationships. His experience as an arts educator has refined his understanding the power of image and its ability to influence. This is demonstrated in his work which serves to uplift and inspire. All in all, expanding to a broad audience of art enthusiasts and collectors.

"Kindergarten" by Laurie Miller Hornik
Mixed media
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

Laurie Miller Hornik has been creating mixed media collages of one kind or another for most of her life. She's interested in taking existing things and arranging them into something new. Her undergraduate degree is from Harvard, where she studied Medieval History and Literature, mostly because she was obsessed with the Unicorn Tapestries at the Cloisters. Some of her collages borrow subject matter, color palette, and even the act of weaving from these tapestries. When she's not making collages, she's a full-time teacher at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx, where she currently chairs the middle school English department. Over the past 28 years, she's taught almost every grade from kindergarten through eighth. She's lived in Yonkers for 25 years.

"Vessel" by Susan Hoeltzel
Pencil and acrylic on canvas
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

Susan Hoeltzel's work combines drawing, painting and printmaking. Her sources range from carefully rendered studies from nature to two-dimensional, media-based images that are translated into line drawings. Objects are enlarged, embellished, and reinvented. Pencil—the most basic medium—remains the dominant element. Hoeltzel received her undergraduate degree from the University of South Alabama and her masters degree from New York University. She has exhibited in the US and internationally. Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, The New York Times, Art News, Arts Magazine, and many other publications. Hoeltzel has taught drawing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for many years and at Lehman College/City University of New York for 28 years.

"Three Watchers & Three Musicians" by Elizabeth de Bethune
Acrylic and mixed materials on canvas
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

Elizabeth de Bethune is a painter and printmaker who mostly makes 2-dimensional images, primarily with representational/observed content, in a painterly realist style. She focuses on the way that surface and image are woven together in the complex spatial dances between figure and ground that creates illusion. She received a BA in Fine Art painting from Yale University, and an MFA in Drawing and Painting from SUNY Purchase. She has also worked extensively with monotype printing, especially at fellowships at Women’s Studio Workshop, and workshops at Center for Contemporary Printmaking and Vermont Studio Center. She has been actively involved in the Rivertowns and Yonkers art scenes for many years.

"Bully" by Samantha Curtis
Mixed media
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

Samantha Curtis is an Artist who teaches. She draws and paints every day as a profession and does her own work during lunch, after school and all other fragments of time. She draws daily and teaches children to draw. She has a BA in Photography and an MFA in painting from Pratt. Photography draws her into an image, a scene, a moment in time while painting demands she releases an emotion or thought trapped in the white surface. She may intend to paint a particular scene but when her hand or brush touches the paper or canvas, a charge of passion, of energy lights up the psyche and she is not sure where it will take her. The exhilarating lines, colors, and imagery escape and will not be contained. Passion, vibrancy, electricity, that is the energy of life... that is Art.

"African Drip Mask" by Nordia Byfield
Acrylic
On display in the show Those Who Teach at the Riverfront Art Gallery until June 19, 2019.

Nature is Nordia Byfield's inspiration; it is her muse. She loves to create compositions that reflect a serene sky, a tranquil seascape and an escapist landscape. She enjoys creating work that acts as a vehicle to transport the art lover and viewer into another realm. Though nature is her main inspiration, she also loves to recreate moments of nostalgia which come from her childhood growing up in the Caribbean. As a Nurse Educator at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, teaching in the classroom and at the bedside is her work, but art is her escape. She was also an Adjunct Faculty for the College of New Rochelle and Monroe College.

Current exhibit: Those Who Teach
Not all art teachers are artists and not all artists are teachers, but there are those educators who maintain a thriving art practice outside of the classroom. We want to showcase those teachers who balance the demanding task of teaching while developing ideas and executing creative projects in an art making practice.
Running until June 19, 2019.

"Contemplation of Butterflies" by Milai Liang
Pencil and paper
On display in the show Womantide at the Riverfront Art Gallery until April 22, 2019.

The portrait draws a woman rest her hand on her chin and slightly lower her head. She looks quiet and modest with smiling on her face, as if she is deeply immersed in her thought. The background depicts floral and butterfly patterns as if interpreting the woman’s contemplation, which recalls the idiom “butterflies in my stomach”. The picture thus addresses the physical feeling like a little tickle traveling up your stomach feel happy. The contrast of bold red papercutting and muted tone of drawing exhibits an intense but a harmonious visual effect.

"Seeking" by Leslie Weissman
Watercolor, oil on paper
On display in the show Womantide at the Riverfront Art Gallery until April 22, 2019.

Dystopian landscapes ranging from Exurbia to Urban environments and the occupants of these surroundings are at the core of Leslie Weissman's practice and current body of work. The distorted and slightly abstracted figures set mostly into obscured and multi-environment backgrounds with contextual elements that depict specific clues about our daily consumption and humility. These environments evolved organically from highly abstracted imagery based on areal pictures of planned suburban and urban developments. The works look to examine the relationship between pluralism and chauvinism, individualism and collectivism; the inherent dichotomy of our neighborhoods and communities, and gender. Do we work toward the good of all or do we look to accomplish and be recognized for our self-focused efforts, and where do these agendas intersect?

"Abstract Study" by Susan Steeg
Acrylic on canvas
On display in the show Womantide at the Riverfront Art Gallery until April 22, 2019.

The creative process has provided Susan Steeg with a way to interpret what she sees in an ever-changing and complex environment. The possibilities in abstraction are endless; with color, composition and myriad materials to re-imagine in each new work of art. Along with painting, she has done printmaking and collage which produce some unexpected and exciting results. Her hope is that more people will look at art as not just something to hang on the wall, but something that will enrich their environment, promote discussion and stimulate the senses.
