Groundwork Hudson Valley

Groundwork Hudson Valley

The Science Barge shoved off today for a month-long hiatus in Kingston for inspection and painting of its hull, after which it will be returned to its usual spot on the Yonkers waterfront. Twenty-five die-hard friends looked on as workers from Thomas J. Feeny Shipyard, along with crane operator Elnar Johannsen of Viking Tug & Barge, pulled up the spuds that anchor the Barge in the river, lifted the gangway, and hitched the Barge to the tug boat to be taken for a 10-hour trip up the river.

"In a way it was hard to watch it go, but we look forward to welcoming the Barge back soon, in all its glory," said Science Barge Captain Bob Walters.

The servicing of the Science Barge, called dry-docking, is being funded by a generous grant from the New NY Bridge Community Benefit Fund. When the Barge returns to the waterfront, it will be outfitted with a shiny new gangway, donated by Yonkers neighbor Jerry Blackstone.
