In case you missed it in June, or if you had such a good time you want to see it again, we have arranged a second screening! See film footage of the 1976 Bicentennial Pageant "Free for All" and some short clips of the events that were part of the 1953 village bicentennial. Join us on Sunday September 13, 2026 at 3:00 in the afternoon at the TW Room, Wyalusing Community Corp. Building, 20 Main St., Wyalusing, PA. Free event, but donations are always welcome.

We are encouraging people to speak up during the screening - if you see someone you recognize on screen, tell the rest of the audience, they will enjoy knowing too!

The teams of Sullivan's March remained in Wyalusing on August 6 and 7 as they were unable to march due to inclement weather. Prior to resuming their march, Corporal Mill and a few others were sent out "to spy out the country". The scouts found no indications of trouble. On August 8, Sullivan's army left Wyalusing and progressed approximately 10 miles up-river, over present-day Lime Hill and Rummerfield Mountain, to Standing Stone. According to the journal entry of Dr. Jabez Campfield, "this day ye army marched sometime by the river, but mostly at some distance over mountains. This place takes its name from a long stone standing upright on the opposite shore, which when it fell from the mountain above, accidently took that position."

According to officers' journal entries, Sullivan's army came to the Wyalusing area on August 5, 1779. They encountered no significant resistance along this portion of the march; but did experience delays due to their "boats being in the rere." At Wyalusing, surveyor Thomas Grant wrote that Wyalusing was a "Noated Indian Town formaly sitled by Moravian Indians who professed Christianity. This town consisted of between 80 or 90 Neat Log Houses Regularly built, likewise a Large Church. This Town and the land ajacent formerly Belonged to an Indian Chief by the name of Joab Chillanay...This place is at present Laid waste...but the Soyl exceeding fine, abounding with the finest Grass I ever saw in a Wild Contry".

Grant notes that on the day before arriving at Wyalusing they had "crossed two pleasant streams", including the Tuscarora Creek (present day Laceyville), the site where Colonel Hartley's reconnaissance tour of 1778 fought with Native Americans.

Sullivan's March began in late July of 1779 from Easton, Pennsylvania. Traveling on foot and horseback, the troops entered the Wyoming Valley and proceeded up the Susquehanna River, employing 4,469 men and over a hundred boats arrived with supplies, followed by 80 loaded wagons and hundreds of pack horses

Sullivan's march traveled through the Meshoppen and Black Walnut area on August 4, 1779. The army was impressed by the enormous black walnut trees. Captain Daniel Livermore remarked, "The finest black walnut timber grown on the terrain that I ever saw." One of the trees measured 14 feet in diameter. The army camped at an abandoned farm in Black Walnut called Vanderlap's Ford, at Catchakany plains.

Sullivan’s March was a major American Revolutionary War campaign in 1779 led by General John Sullivan to destroy the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy’s ability to attack frontier settlements. After devastating raids by British-allied Iroquois and Loyalists in 1778, especially in Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley and New York’s Cherry Valley, General George Washington ordered Sullivan to strike deep into Iroquois territory.

Sullivan gathered about 4,500 troops from multiple states, including New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York, plus riflemen and artillery. The plan was to march from Easton, Pennsylvania, up the Susquehanna River Valley, link with James Clinton’s force from the Mohawk Valley, and then move into the heart of Haudenosaunee lands. The goal was a scorched-earth strategy — burn villages, destroy crops, and drive the Haudenosaunee into British-held Fort Niagara, hoping they would lose their ability to fight and rely on British support.

The expedition passed through the Wyalusing area in early August of 1779, and the diaries of soldiers on the expedition provide a fascinating glimpse into the landscape of the area in the late 1700s. We will be sharing excerpts from these diaries over the next week.

Here is one more photograph from our collection associated with Wyalusing's Bicentennial (1953) and Jubilee Days (1954) celebrations. We could use your help in identifying the year of this particular pageant and the performers. Any guesses? For this one, we're not even sure which scene in the program it is.
