📍 Something New Is Coming to Wrightsville’s Civil War Story

This week, volunteers gathered to install Historic Wrightsville, Inc.’s newest historical marker, which will soon tell one of the community’s most intriguing pieces of folklore.

The marker, funded through a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Legends & Lore® Marker Program, highlights the story of Silas Smith and a strange coincidence connected to the Confederate occupation of Wrightsville on June 28, 1863, during the Civil War.

Many know Wrightsville’s role in the burning of the bridge, effectively halting the eastern invasion and setting the stage for the Battle of Gettysburg. But this lesser-known tale adds another fascinating layer to our community’s rich Civil War heritage. Legends and stories passed down through generations help us understand not only what happened here, but how those events shaped local memory and identity.

Join us as we officially unveil the marker at a dedication ceremony on Saturday, June 27, featuring noted Civil War historian Scott Mingus as keynote speaker.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible and to the volunteers who assisted with the installation.

Stay tuned for additional details about the dedication ceremony—we hope to see you there!
