🦴 FOSSIL FRIDAY
Fossils may have survived millions of years underground, but that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible.

Fossils can be incredibly heavy while also being surprisingly fragile. That’s why creating a strong support jacket is such an important part of fossil preparation. These jackets help counter the effects of gravity and time, protecting specimens from damage while allowing them to be safely moved, studied, and researched for generations to come.

🦴 FOSSIL FRIDAY
Those grooves on a ceratopsian horn aren’t random!

Take a close look at a ceratopsian horn and you may notice grooves running along its surface. Those grooves mark the pathways where blood vessels supplied the growing horn.

Just like the growth rings in a tree can tell us about its history, features like these can give paleontologists clues about how dinosaur horns grew and developed.

We have a winner... well, sort of.

After all of your incredible name submissions, we've officially named our Xiphactinus...

Anthony. 🐟

Yes, it's named after our curator, Anthony Maltese.

Why? Because after discovering so many Xiphactinus fossils in the field over the years, Anthony has reached the point where he never wants to see another one again.

So naturally, we made sure he'll have to look at one every single day.

Congratulations (or condolences?) to Anthony, our newest permanent exhibit. Thanks to everyone who submitted names and helped make this contest so much fun!

Stop by and say hello to Anthony... the fish, not the curator. Although he'll probably be here too.
