Why basset hounds? 🐾

If you’ve ever spotted basset hound logos, signs, statues, or parade pride around Woodinville and wondered, “Wait… why bassets?” — let’s settle this very Woodinville mystery.

It started in 1983, when Gary and Patti Greene brought their love of bassets from Southern California to Woodinville — along with an idea they had seen and loved: a Basset Bash and Brigade.

So they asked Woodinville’s April Fools’ Day Parade planners, including Carol Edwards, a very important question:

What if Woodinville had its own basset brigade?

Long ears. Short legs. Big personality.

Some wondered if bassets were “sophisticated” enough for Woodinville.

Woodinville answered: Absolutely. Obviously. We're in. 😂

And just like that, the bassets marched their way into Woodinville history.

Today, the Basset Brigade and Basset Bash are part of Celebrate Woodinville — complete with waddles, howls, floppy ears, and one of the most wonderfully Woodinville traditions around.

So yes, Woodinville takes its basset hounds seriously.

Very seriously.

With pride, pageantry, and very short legs. 🐶💚

Now you’re in on the Woodinville story.

Do you remember the early Basset Bash days? Drop your memories below — we’d love to hear them.

*Note: Gary Greene passed away in 2024, and on his grave marker is you guessed it, a basset hound. Thank you Gary for bringing the bassets to Woodinville.

It’s happening! ✨

Behind every new exhibit are the people who roll up their sleeves, move the boxes, clean the corners, sort the stories, and help bring Woodinville’s history to life.

A huge thank you to the volunteers and team members helping prepare the museum for our new exhibit. These are the hands behind the history — and we can’t wait to share these pieces of history.

Join us for the new exhibit opening:

This Memorial Day, we pause at historic Woodinville Cemetery in remembrance.

Here among the headstones are names connected to Woodinville’s own story — men and women who served our country, families who waited, and generations who carried the weight of service and sacrifice.

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is not abstract. It lives in real communities, real families, and real lives changed by service.

Today, we remember those who gave all, honor those who served, and hold their stories in grateful remembrance.

In 1931, John DeYoung built this house for Ellen using local labor and materials from the Woodinville area.

Nearly a century later, the Woodinville Heritage Society & Museum is carrying that same spirit forward.

As we care for the DeYoung House today, we continue to rely on the generosity, skill, and support of our local community. From Kathy Maloney helping us with curtains to Tom Brisk of Brisk Home Services helping with power washing, so many people continue to show up for this place in meaningful ways.

This house was built by Woodinville, and it is still being cared for by Woodinville.

To everyone who has donated time, talent, materials, expertise, encouragement, or a helping hand—thank you. You are helping us preserve not just a building, but a shared piece of our community’s story.

**You know you’re a Woodinviller when…**

You learn the back roads.
You find your favorite coffee spot, tasting room, shop, or quiet corner.
You become a roundabout master.
You remember NE 175th without a stoplight.
You recognize the sign in this photo.
You start recognizing familiar faces.
You hear a story about what used to be here — and suddenly the place feels a little deeper.
You remember Mack’s, Norm’s, or Woodinville Hardware.

Whether you’ve lived here for decades or just found your way here, we want to hear from you:

**Finish this sentence:**
**“You know you’re a Woodinviller when…”**

Funny, nostalgic, specific, heartfelt — all answers count.

Drop yours in the comments, tag someone who would have a good one, and follow us as we collect the stories that make Woodinville feel like Woodinville.

Because the story of Woodinville isn’t just in our archives.
It’s in the people who remember it — and the people learning to love it now.

This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring five women whose lives helped shape the story of Woodinville.

They rowed across lakes. Raised children. Cleared land. Ran households, farms, hotels, stores, greenhouses, and community programs. They cooked, taught, gardened, organized, worked, endured loss, and kept going.

Their stories remind us that Woodinville was not built by one person, one family, or one moment. It was built through generations of care, grit, imagination, and community.

To understand Woodinville, we have to know the women who helped make it home.

Happy Mother’s Day from Woodinville Heritage Society & Museum.

Nellie Stimson
She grew beauty into business.

This Mother’s Day, we honor Nellie Stimson and the women whose creativity, care, and leadership helped shape the story of Woodinville. Nellie brought beauty, vision, and enterprise to the community. On the Stimson property — now the site of Chateau Ste. Michelle — she landscaped the Hollywood grounds and built her greenhouse business, Hollywood Gardens.

From Woodinville, she shipped roses and carnations across the country, supplied Northwest florists, and served her own Seattle shop. Nellie’s story reminds us that Woodinville has always been a place where land, creativity, and business vision grow together.

Follow us for more stories that shaped Woodinville. We're here for ya!
