Why basset hounds? 🐾
If you’ve ever spotted basset hound logos, signs, statues, or parade pride around Woodinville and wondered, “Wait… why bassets?” — let’s settle this very Woodinville mystery.
It started in 1983, when Gary and Patti Greene brought their love of bassets from Southern California to Woodinville — along with an idea they had seen and loved: a Basset Bash and Brigade.
So they asked Woodinville’s April Fools’ Day Parade planners, including Carol Edwards, a very important question:
What if Woodinville had its own basset brigade?
Long ears. Short legs. Big personality.
Some wondered if bassets were “sophisticated” enough for Woodinville.
Woodinville answered: Absolutely. Obviously. We're in. 😂
And just like that, the bassets marched their way into Woodinville history.
Today, the Basset Brigade and Basset Bash are part of Celebrate Woodinville — complete with waddles, howls, floppy ears, and one of the most wonderfully Woodinville traditions around.
So yes, Woodinville takes its basset hounds seriously.
Very seriously.
With pride, pageantry, and very short legs. 🐶💚
Now you’re in on the Woodinville story.
Do you remember the early Basset Bash days? Drop your memories below — we’d love to hear them.
*Note: Gary Greene passed away in 2024, and on his grave marker is you guessed it, a basset hound. Thank you Gary for bringing the bassets to Woodinville.
