Before the arrival of the railroad in Winthrop the only form of public transportation was a Stage and Express line to Boston begun in 1848. This line ran from Maverick Square, East Boston, to the Point and later ran over the ferry to Scollay Square, Boston. It was in operation until the advent of the horse railroad in 1873.

ok 2 different pictures, but looking at the same area. First one shows the single track that circled the Town around 1888, something is missing in the background. Washington Ave., a foot bridge (not shown yet). The second picture taken around 1932 or more, shows Lewis Lake, Golf coarse and if you look closer you can point out Millers field. They told me 1 picture can tell many stories. Lets keep up this week. Enjoy

I received this email yesterday, thought to share with everyone.

Bob, thanks once again for taking the time to meet me yesterday at the Winthrop heritage exhibit. I was impressed...the exhibit was not just informative but very professionally produced. I enjoyed seeing it and hearing your comments about Winthrop's history.

Does anyone know where I can find a complete list of all the public stairs (and their locations) in Winthrop? Thanks!
Might you have any information on the breakwaters? When did they go up? Were there only 3 or 4 to start with? Was an additional 1 or 2 added, possibly in the 60s? When did they start to be called the "five sisters"? Also, Is Winthrop-by-the-Sea a new or older convention for the town name?
