The Moravians of Salem, North Carolina are thought to have celebrated the first official Fourth of July in the United States in 1783. Their celebration was documented by the Moravian Church and there are no government records of earlier celebrations. The Moravians' celebration began with trombone music, a tradition they enjoyed. It then included a Love Feast, a Moravian tradition that celebrates community rather than a sacrament. The service took place in the church and included a simple meal, usually coffee with cream and sugar and a sweet bun, and singing of a "Psalm of Joy". The Moravians may also claim to have created the first patriotic song to celebrate the nation's freedom.

Did you know that Old Salem was the site of the very first official 4th of July ...

The Moravians were German-speaking Protestants who followed Jan Hus, a Bohemian heretic who was burned at the stake in 1415. They are considered the first Protestants, predating the Lutherans by 100 years.

In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy".

Look who visited us today! May 20th would have been the 102 birthday of Johnnie Anderson of “Johnnie’s Shoe Shop” the long time business owner of a business on Trade Street! North Trade Street Arts is happily occupying the space that was the family’s beauty shop for the last 10 years and we have done several tributes with the Anderson Family for their Dad and Mom!

Pictured here is Pamela Anderson, Johnnie’s youngest child. Her dad’s favorite color was green and so she wore this outfit in his honor and visited with us today!

The flowers are in the front window this week with the newspaper articles.

Happy heavenly birthday to Johnnie Anderson and all the best to the Anderson family!

LAAC Exhibiting Artist and Board member Rick Jones’s watercolor of the “Historic Butner House” is one of the three major prizes in the effort to “Raise the Roof.”

Mr Jones’ work is carried exclusively at North Trade Street Arts Center in the Downtown Arts District.

NTSA also carries the Moravian pottery by New Salem Potteries’ Pugh family.

Rick was also honored by the North Carolina State DAR for his historic watercolors of Bethabara, Salem and Lewisville that have been exhibited at several locations and functions in the last year.

Let’s help Bethabara “Raise the Roof” on these architectural treasures...art and history entwined!

This is the space that is now “Eyes on Trade” - but several years before they renovated the old Johnnie’s Shoe Shop space and set up shop - where they also do great window design.

We had a key to the empty space for a while to help show the space to people and staged one of the fashion shows that we held in the street from this space while it was empty.

Pictured is one of the dancers - rehearsing in a “Retro Art Wear” body suit - prior to this half of the platform “runway” being taken out from this space to the street for the fashion show during the hop.

We still own this stage (which can make a runway or stage) and would have loved to produce another “Fashion Plate” with Finnigans - “Art to Wear” with AFAS or “STRUT” with DADA and NTSA featuring all the repurposed, woven, vintage, tie dyed, and original art clothing from artists and businesses on the block.

We did 3 shows in the streets during various “DADA 1st Friday Gallery Hops” and 1 with “ARTS on SUNDAY. “

There were plans for 2023...

It was great fun with a lot of people watching/eating/buying and participating...

We live in hope.
