When did John Smith’s map of Virginia become an icon of American memory? More recently than you might think.

John Smith’s maps of Virginia and New England are both widely recognized as important pieces of colonial American history. Virginia, with its representations of Powhatan’s village and the Indigenous tribes living in the Tidewater region, has become synonymous with the founding of Virginia itself.

But when did this map become so ingrained in public memory? And why didn’t Smith’s New England ever achieve this same iconic status? Cassandra Farrell, Senior Map Archivist at the Library of Virginia, explores the fascinating historiography of these maps through their use in celebrations, festivals, expositions, and illustrations in literature.

Head to the MESDA Journal to read her newly published article, “Icons of American Memory? John Smith’s Maps of Virginia and New England.”

Seeds with Stories: Broom Corn Sorghum (Sorghum vulgare)

Originating in northeastern Africa, Sorghum has been identified as early as 8,000 BC in Nabta Playa, near the border between Egypt and Sudan. Sorghums are a variety of grass that has been used in many ways such as syrup, grain, fodder, biofuel, and broom making.

Though it is unclear exactly when sorghum came to the US, the first written record of sorghum being in America is from Benjamin Franklin in 1757, who wrote about brooms being made with sorghum.

These tall sorghums growing in the Single Brothers Garden are 'Black Seeded Hungarian' broomcorn, which has long fibrous seed branches. This type of sorghum is used mainly in broom-making, though the seeds are also used as animal feed.

First Waughtown Baptist Church (FWBC) will celebrate its 157th anniversary this upcoming weekend!

With historic ties to Salem and St. Philips Moravian Church, FWBC members recently visited Old Salem for a special Hidden Town tour.

The start was made in the Old Salem Visitor Center at the Happy Hill exhibit “Selections from Across the Creek.”

Learn more about this wonderful exhibit here: https://www.oldsalem.org/selections-from-across-the-creek/

Included in the exhibit is a portrait of Washington Fries with a grandchild, from the collection of descendant Clara Caldwell, a resident of historic Waughtown-Belview. Mrs. Caldwell attended the Hidden Town tour and shared about the portrait of her ancestor.

Learn more about the Hidden Town Project here: https://www.oldsalem.org/hidden-town-project/

According to historian Mel White, “Wash” was born in Virginia in 1836 and had early ties to the Fries Woolen Mill in Salem, first as an enslaved man and after Emancipation, as a mill worker. He was also a barber and a gardener. He married Harriet in 1859 in the Waughtown community, and they had eleven children.

For more information about First Waughtown Baptist Church, visit https://www.firstwaughtown.org.

Congratulations FWBC!

We have these plates purchased from Salem around 1859. Our folks traveled from Caswell County by wagon to buy a set of dishes. We are wondering what they might be worth?
Good afternoon.... is it possible to still visit the bridge at old Salem for pictures??? Thank you much 👍

What would bakers have put a few Moravian cookies in to give them to a friend in 1776? A tin perhaps. A basket would be much too big.
Old Salem Museums & Gardens I saw a post on the background of the Old Salem Teapot, and found it carried a disconcerting update on its status as of April, 2020. The update indicated the teapot has been removed, as it seems to have been cause in the past for discussions of its location, actual significance, degree of advertising value, and the like.

Can you provide information on its current location, and whether or not it will be returned to the prominent spot its occupied for so many years? Was it taken down because of the ongoing infrastructure work in Old Salem, and the surrounding area? Is there another issue that caused it to be removed?

Any details you can provide is greatly appreciated. Old Salem just would not be the same without this iconic, and historic, symbol!
So, is this what we'll be wearing when we re-open?
We are mapping real-time data during the COVID-19 crisis of free/reduced food options. Let us know if you'd like us to add Victory Gardens to the map as well if you need volunteers to deliver or otherwise help in your wonderful efforts.

So sorry that lots of kids are missing their class trips, but on the good side, a bunch of us from far away were just treated to a really accessible learning experience about clay and pottery through the new Exploratorium. Thanks for your creativity in a tough situation!
I recently visited Old Salem while in town on business and took a several interesting images. Here are a few of my favorites.
Beautiful land.
I lost a set of keys somewhere on the streets of old Salem 12/31. If anyone comes across a set or knows if there is a lost and found, please PM me.
This is the Moravian Star we purchased Saturday..My husband Glen Green made it into a Chandelier...
