We are thrilled to hear that NASCAR is coming back to its roots at Bowman Gray Stadium!

This race weekend will have a major economic impact for Visit Winston-Salem and Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. as well as every single business in downtown. This is a great opportunity as a community to show visitors what an amazing city Winston-Salem is!

Bobby Allison was a NASCAR racing legend and icon. He was always eager to meet his fans and sign autographs with a genuine big smile. His support of the museum over the past two years meant the world to us and we are forever grateful to him.

I’m truly saddened by the passing of Bobby Allison. He has been a good friend and hero of mine since I first met him when I was 15 years old in 1972 and worked on his pit crew for Junior Johnson. Bobby and Judy Allison were good friends with both my mother and father. He was one of the finest men I have ever known and one of the greatest race car drivers to ever strap on a helmet!

I had the pleasure of many good times with Bobby, having lunch with friends, NASCAR Hall of Fame functions and when we reopened the Win Cup Museum after COVID. Bobby and Donnie Allison, along with Will Cronkite, came and signed autographs at our Grand Reopening (one of the museum's largest attended events). They again did an autograph session for us at our Win Cup Museum display during the NASCAR All Star race in 2023 (fans started lining up at 12:30 for a 2:30-4:30 signing). They started signing at 2:00 because the line was so long and didn’t finish until 5:00, after every fan had an autograph or photo! That’s just the kind of men they were—always giving back to their fans!

I’m going to miss our lunches and phone calls but I feel blessed to have known and called Bobby Allison my friend! God speed and rest in peace!

The Era of Winston Cup

The NASCAR Winston Cup Series began in 1971 when R.J. Reynolds To***co Company’s Winston Brand became the title sponsor of NASCAR’s elite division, the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Division. Winston was the first non-automotive sponsor to enter NASCAR on a fulltime basis. Over the next 33 years, the Winston sponsorship ushered in what is considered to be the “modern era” of NASCAR.

The R.J. Reynolds To***co Company decided to end its sponsorship in 2003. That year, Matt Kenseth won the championship. Following the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, 1971 Winston Cup champion Richard Petty drove a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona while Kenseth’s team owner, Jack Roush, followed in a 2003 Ford Ta**us in “The Victory Lap,” the final Winston Cup lap ever. The cars driven by Petty and Roush are both on display at The Winston Cup Museum.
