Kaleideum Downtown is formerly the Children's Museum of Winston-Salem, which merged with SciWorks in July 2016. The two museums began talks of a possible collaboration in early 2015, with a new mission of “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.” The merged entity combines the features of both museums – blending arts, literacy, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) orientations into an integrated approach to learning. With all the clouds and rain, it's fun to look for rainbows. If you can't find one outside, though, you can do this experiment in your kitchen with Skittles, water, and a white plate to create your own rainbow! Have your kids make a hypothesis about what will happen when the water is poured on the Skittles. Help them learn more about dissolving, absorption, and how colors mix. Ask open-ended questions, such as: 1) What changes could they make to this experiment? 2) Could this Skittles science experiment work with another type of candy such as gumdrops? 3) What would happen if you tried a different liquid and compared the results? In this Kaleideum At Home video, we explain light pollution with a NC Science Festival activity. Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial (usually outdoor) light. Too much light pollution washes out starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and wastes energy. This experiment is especially topical during mid April when we can see the Lyrids Meteor Shower. Every year at this time, Earth passes through debris left behind from Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. The Lyrids meteor shower has been observed for more than 2.600 years and got its name from where the meteors appear to radiate: the constellation Lyra, the harp. In 2020, the best time to see this shower is right before dawn on April 22 after the moon sets. So grab a sleeping bag, lay down in the grass in an area that has little light pollution with your feet pointing east, and look up. You might be lucky to see 10 to 20 meteors per hour, but some people may be lucky enough to see more than 100 per hour.
