Affeldt Mion Museum Affeldt Mion Museum in the 1930 Depot at La Posada Hotel celebrating history and the art of the Winslow Studio Artists.

Suggested $5 Donation to benefit the Winslow Arts Trust. Open seven days a week 9am - 5pm, as staffing allows! The Affeldt Mion Museum located in La Posada Hotel’s 1930 depot connects the history of Winslow Arizona through art. The founders, Allan Affeldt and Tina Mion, celebrate the traditions brought by native people and then expanded upon by visionaries, past and present, who have contributed to Winslow’s success. The Affeldt Mion Museum values historic preservation, creative expression, and an appreciation of the bigger picture of what art can do for a community. $5 suggested donation benefits the Winslow Arts Trust.

The Winslow Arts Trust received a lovely donation from John Tedrick this month, an H. Raymond Henry (1882–1974) print of the Grand Canyon from Union Pacific Grand Canyon Lodge ca. 1928–1930. This was commissioned by the Union Pacific System to capture the panoramic view from the terrace of the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim. H. Raymond Henry—known for his dramatic Southwest landscapes—depicts visitors looking out over Bright Angel Canyon. This print was widely reproduced to promote rail travel to the National Parks during the late 1920s and 1930s, and remains an iconic image of early Grand Canyon tourism. The print is now part of the Winslow Arts Trust/Affeldt Mion Museum collection, and can be seen near the newly reopened Tower Rooms. Our thanks to Mr. Tedrick for his generous donation.

This week we had a visit from Mark and Moira Howmann who drove a van all the way from California to deliver a donation of 30 boxes of art books from the Laguna Art Museum (LAM). Mark has been sorting through duplicate books at the Carole Reynolds Art Research Library at LAM, and the hundreds of books he delivered to Affeldt Mion Museum feature the work of numerous West Coast artists. Special Projects Manager Dan Lutzick gave the Howmann's a tour of the hotel and museum. Dan will be working on creating a reading area where the public can spend time exploring the new collection.

Every year, Airstream Club International puts together a Southwest Adventure Caravan. This year’s trip brought 58 first-time visitors to La Posada.

To give everyone an intimate experience, we split the crowd into two groups for an immersive double tour. Special Projects Manager Dan Lutzick guided half through the historic grounds of La Posada, while Creative Director Lori Bentley Law led the other through the museum before switching off. To top off the day, Dan and his wife Ann-Mary took a group on a special bonus tour of the nearby Snowdrift Art Space.

They were a wonderfully engaged group whose energy lasted through nearly three hours of tours!

"Learning about this remarkable place and the history preserved in the museum—including Diyogi Tsoh “The Big Rug” and the Pleasure Dome—was a highlight of our visit. And our bonus visit to Snowdrift Art Space was amazing. We are grateful to you all for your time, generosity, and enthusiasm. Your stories and dedication brought the history, art, and spirit of Winslow to life for all of us."

Here are two images of the same arch in the Affeldt Mion Museum. The current image has a portion of the Big Rug visible, along with a hand-made wall gear system by artist John Suttman and the turquoise colored entrance and sculptures to the Arrays exhibit by Dan Lutzick in the WSA Gallery. The second image is from 2010, and it shows the same view through the old depot freight room into the Santa Fe Railroad annex. When the depot was repurposed into the Affeldt Mion Museum in 2017, the annex was in bad shape and it was demolished to make way for the WSA Gallery and an ADA compliant ramp to access the gallery.

On Tuesday we had a visit with Journalist Michael Salerno who was writing a story for Arizona Republic newspaper. Michael has been visiting towns all along the Arizona stretch of Route 66, and he has been questioning people who live along Route 66 about their experiences. Our Special Projects Manager Dan Lutzick has lived and worked on Route 66 for 32 years, and he shared a few stories about the history and renovation of La Posada Hotel, and about artists and designers who have contributed to the project. This image was taken in the Winslow Studio Artist Gallery in the Affeldt Mion Museum next to La Posada Hotel.

Just off the historic Lobby in La Posada Hotel is a documentary viewing room that tells the story of artist and La Posada co-owner Tina Mion, her journey to Winslow in 1997, and the influences that have shaped her large body of art work. Tina is a founding member of the Winslow Studio Artists, and her paintings are on view throughout the hotel. There is a dedicated gallery for her work on view on the second floor near the east wing.

Tina Mion working on the signature painting for her upcoming show, Road to Winslow, opening in our Winslow Studio Artists Gallery at AMM on a very special date. Tina moved into the dilapidated, long-closed La Posada Hotel on April 1st, 1997. To mark the 30th anniversary of that occasion, we will be presenting a quiet, surreal exhibition of new Tina Mion paintings, with artifacts and memories. The exhibit will run April 1, 2027 - March 31, 2028. In lieu of a big social event, we will have quiet book signings when the book is published (yes, she is writing a beautiful coffee table book!), dates to be announced for those gatherings.
