Happy birthday to Vincent van Gogh, born 168 years ago today! Van Gogh, who would become one of the most celebrated and influential figures in Western art after his death in 1890 at the age of 37, is known for his brightly colored, evocative canvases. However, "The Beach at Scheveningen" (1882), on display at MMAM, lacks the opulent color palette of his later work. In this piece, one of Van Gogh's very first oil paintings, you see the muted, earth-tone colors that are common in many of his early charcoal drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings. Van Gogh was proud of this early effort in oils, writing to his brother Theo that "I am sure people could not tell that it belongs to my first painted studies."

Vincent van Gogh, "The Beach at Scheveningen," 1882. Oil on canvas. Private collection, Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Winona, MN, USA.

Happy birthday to Daniel Ridgway Knight, born on this day in 1839. An American painter who lived and worked in France, Knight became know as the "pleasant peasant" painter for his idyllic depictions of peasants in the French countryside. This formula proved successful for Knight, as he received numerous awards and recognitions for his work and was able to earn a comfortable living. He would build a glass studio at his home in Poissy, France, where he could take full advantage of daylight while painting models dressed to match his idealized vision of the French peasantry. See his "The Brook" (1894) on exhibition at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

Happy birthday to William Glackens, born on this day in 1870! Glackens was part of a group of painters known as "The Eight" that would form the basis of the art movement, the Ashcan School, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Ashcan artists' paintings tended towards scenes of urban New York, but Glackens focused more on leisure and entertainment in his work.

While Glackens has the distinction of being one of the first American artists to find success without training in Europe, he was an admirer of the French Impressionists. He adopted the quick brush strokes and bright colors of the Impressionist, as seen in his painting "Portsmouth Harbor, New Hampshire" (1909), on exhibition at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

In recognition of International Women's Day, we're taking a look at how the relationship between two pioneering women left a lasting mark on the art world in a new MMAM Art Stream Blog.

Mary Cassatt (1844-1929) is a painter familiar to most lovers of American art and Impressionism. She is renowned for her insightful portraits of mothers and their children, and their daily lives in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Pennsylvania, she spent most of her adult l

Today is the birthday of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, born on this day in 1872. In his "Two Trees Silhouetted Behind a Water Course" (c. 1901) on display at MMAM, you can see Mondrian begin to emphasize form over content as he works toward the pure abstraction seen in his later works. The second image has an overlay in red, showing how a gridwork is beginning to form in this painting that breaks the image down into sections. In the last image, a painting from 1936, Mondrian has removed all recognizable contents, leaving behind only form and pure color.

Happy birthday to Pierre-Auguste Renoir, born 180 years ago today! Renoir's keen eye for light, color and beauty has made him one of the most popular painters of the French Impressionist movement. Born in Limoges, France in 1841, Renoir began an apprenticeship painting delicate flowers on decorative porcelain in one of Limoges' famous porcelain factories at the age of 13. Recognized for his talent, Renoir would begin more formal artistic training in 1860. Flowers would continue to be a common element of his paintings throughout his artistic career, as seen in his "La Fête de Pan" or "The Festival of Pan" (1879), on display at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
