Karen Savage-Blue's paintings draw on the traditions of her Anishinaabe heritage. In "Manoomin Harvest," Savage-Blue depicts her brother collecting manoomin (wild rice). Manoomin is historically, spiritually, and culturally important to the Anishinaabe people. Prior to colonization it was a staple part of their diet. The labor intensive process requires two people to harvest; one person paddles a canoe while the other knocks the grains into the boat using long wooden sticks.

See Karen Savage-Blue's exhibition "Laughing Waters" through January 15, 2023 at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. https://www.mmam.org/karen-savage-blue

“When you donate to MMAM, you’re directly supporting local artists! Here at Burnet, we’ve been so impressed by MMAM’s work to provide local artists an amazing venue to exhibit, as well as their well thought out approach to acquiring the work of living Minnesota artists.”
– Jennifer Phelps, Director, Burnet Fine Art & Advisory

Andi Sutton, the Executive Director of the Southeast Regional Sustainable Development Partnership (UMN Extension), discusses how MMAM is committing to improving the environments (social, cultural and natural) they operate from. This includes making the riverside grounds and outdoor green spaces more visitor friendly, and ensuring MMAM’s operations are more climate-forward.

“It's thrilling to have MMAM as a resource, a source of contemplation, and a catalyst for change. Water, Nature, Climate Change... these topics are complex, terribly rich, and more urgent than ever to engage in. Art is such a powerful way to communicate their complexity, richness, and urgency, and all of the new futures we might aspire to within them. MMAM--thank you for shepherding these conversations here in Minnesota and supporting the artists who spark them!”

“I'm very excited about the future of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Our upcoming exhibitions will feature more diverse voices from our community and beyond. Supporting projects like the Back Channel Radio podcast, and the upcoming Flora & Fauna exhibition will allow us to share new stories and highlight regional and world-renowned artists together in an accessible, rural setting, and prompt visitors to envision new ways of seeing their relationship to water. Your donation allows us to continue to deepen our connection to the community and explore new ways of sharing great art inspired by water.”

As we recover from the pandemic and reimagine our future, MMAM remains steadfast in its commitment to its mission-driven work - creating meaningful art experiences that explore the historic and ongoing relationship to water.

At the beginning of the year, we turned to our longstanding and expanding community of supporters and asked you what your hopes and dreams were for the museum. We heard you loud and clear. You want to see a museum committed to Arts Stewardship, Community Engagement, and Environmental Mentorship.

Well, we’ve reimagined, dreamed big, and are ready to move forward. Our vision for the future is ambitious and we want you to be part of it.

We are asking you to go that extra step, on this Give To The Max day, and join the thousands of Minnesotans stepping up to bat for the nonprofits they love.

Marlena Myles was the featured artists on Google's homepage yesterday, reimagining the Google logo to honor the indigenous game of stickball. MMAM had the pleasure of having Marlena on site with us for a week this summer as an artist in residence, and we are excited to be working with her in 2023 to create an augmented reality arts experience!

On the first day of Native American heritage month, Google is honoring the North American Indigenous game of stickball with a doodle by Saint Paul-based artist Marlena Myles.

The Delicate Art of Greening a Museum

"The museum held a series of community listening sessions earlier this year to rethink what their focus on 'great art inspired by water' could mean today, beyond white men astride their boats.

'We had to ask ourselves, what is the cultural relationship that communities historically have had with water here?' Po***ck says. 'And why is zero of that content in our work — in our collections, in our exhibitions, in our programming?'"

Thank you, Reasons to be Cheerful, for including MMAM in this conversation!

Arts and culture institutions are rethinking temperature control, exhibits and more to mitigate climate change.

"Nick Wroblewski: The Draw of the Lake" opens today at MMAM!

Nick Wroblewski is an award-winning woodcut printmaker based out of Duluth, MN. On exhibit are his recent large, colorful, handcrafted prints celebrating nature and the rugged beauty of Lake Superior's North Shore.

His printmaking is traditional, technical, and precise, but he leaves room for creativity and spontaneity during the process. Nick's multicolored prints have a style reminiscent of and influenced by 19th century Japanese master printmakers, yet are uniquely his own.

On view at MMAM through January 8, 2023.

In October of 2013, artist Karen Savage-Blue set a goal to create a new painting every day for 365 days, despite the challenges of everyday life.

"I think that it's important for artists to be committed to their work and to be able to do their painting, or whatever art form they are doing, and not allow external factors to dictate whether they are going to do their art on that day or not," says Savage-Blue.

See selections from her "365 Series" in her exhibition "Laughing Waters," on view through December 31, 2022 at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. https://www.mmam.org/karen-savage-blue

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum operates from Mni Sota Makoce (Land Where the Waters Reflect The Clouds), the traditional homeland of the Dakota people. Residing here since time immemorial, Dakota still call Mni Sota Makoce home, with four federally recognized Dakota nations and many more Dakota people residing in what is now the state of Minnesota. Due to continued legacies of coloniziation, genocide and forced removal, generations of Dakota poeple remain disenfranchised from their traditional homeland. Presently, Mni Sota Makoce has become a refuge and home for many Indigenous nations and peoples, including seven federally recognized Ojibwe nations. We humbly encourage our audiences to reflect upon the historical legacies held in the lands they occupy.

Did we catch you at a double-take?!😲🤔 We promise, your eyes are NOT deceiving you--there are in fact two iconic "Washington Crossing the Delaware" paintings by Emanuel Leutze (1851) on public display!🤩 These masterworks were painted simultaneously by the artist after the original work was damaged in a studio fire in 1850. The top painting previously hung in The White House West Wing before being added to the permanent collection at Minnesota Marine Art Museum here in Winona🥰🤗 (Also celebrating its 15th anniversary this week!🎉). The bottom painting can be spotted at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, photo courtesy of Bradley Gearhart👏
