As part of the Second Saturday: Home Edition, there will be free Art Kits available at MMAM on October 10!

With the theme for October’s Second Saturday as “On Cloud Nine: Exploring the Skies & Landscapes of MMAM,” we have used clouds as our inspiration for a fun art project. On Saturday, Oct. 10, between 10AM. and 12PM (or until supplies run out), we will be offering curbside pick up of 300 art kits at the MMAM located at 800 Riverview Drive. It's Toddler Tuesday! Curator of Education Heather Casper takes a look at the painting "A Gust of Wind, Morning in May" (c. 1890) by Alfred Sisley and pairs it with the poem "Wind on the Hill" by A. A. Milne.

One of the things we love about art is its ability to inspire the imagination. Take a minute to watch the video with your child. Let them lead the conversation. After you’re done, here are a few imaginative play ideas to suggest to them.

1. Pretend you are being pushed by really strong wind. What can you hold on to so you don't get blown away?

2. Pretend you are looking through tall grasses to find bugs or animals for scientific study. What are you curious about?

3. Look at the clouds in the sky. What shapes do you see?

4. Find a box, or a blanket, and pretend you are in a “boat” that flies in the sky and catches lightning.

5. On the next breezy day, head outside and pretend and play in the wind!

Before trade unions gave us the 8 hour work day, child labors laws and a day off on Labor Day, French artist Jean-François Millet depicted the daily lives of farmers and laborers at work. While most artists of the period painted scenes that appealed to aristocratic, wealthy buyers, Millet highlighted working-class people experiencing the reality of repetitive, backbreaking work. His "Peasant Spreading Manure" (1851), on display at MMAM, suggests the worker as a heroic figure in his struggle with the soil.

What a treasure! Not to be missed if you're in the area.
We had the best afternoon strolling through this beautiful art museum. The pieces on exhibit were of the caliber you would expect to find only in a large city. Can't wait to visit again with my mom who was an art teacher.
