"Re/Framing The View: Nineteenth-century American Landscapes" aims to recast American landscape paintings through a careful consideration of the roles women played in picturing nature – via still life, needlepoint, watercolor, and decorative arts.

"Re/Framing The View" is drawn from six private collections, the New Bedford Whaling Museum collection, and six strategic institutional loans. The exhibition is on view through August 4, 2024 at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. https://mmam.org/reframing-the-view

"My life is tied to water. It defines and shapes the world I live in. This love is intergenerational and knowing that I am connected to family that is my blood and family I have made. There is nothing more compelling than strong moving water, waterfalls, rapids, currents, and streams. This is a conceptual piece that has been on my mind and been evolving as it moves along the river." - Karen Goulet

Karen Goulet's piece, "Falling Water," is part of the exhibition "Aabijijiwan / Ukeyat yanalleh, It Flows Continuously: Karen Goulet and Monique Verdin," on view now through July 7 at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. https://mmam.org/aabijijiwan

Through a large-scale, two-gallery expansive installation, "Mustafah Abdulaziz: Water" documents international issues of water access. “Mustafah Abdulaziz's work captures the profound interplay between humanity and the environment, evoking an affecting narrative of our impact on the planet,” says Dave Casey, Director of Engagement at MMAM. “Viewers leave with the stark understanding that climate change is not something to deal with in the future, but something that is having devastating consequences for people and the planet today.”

"Mustafah Abdulaziz: Water" is on view now though June 23 at MMAM.

"Re/Framing The View: Nineteenth-century American Landscapes" is on view now at MMAM through August 4, 2024.

Drawn from six private collections, the New Bedford Whaling Museum collection, and six strategic institutional loans, "Re/Framing the View" offers a layered interpretation of the cultural and historical meanings of Nineteenth Century landscape paintings. Curated by Naomi Slipp, the Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Chair for the Chief Curator at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, MA, the exhibition interrogates the place of gender, race and ethnicity, as well as environment and ecology, as we re/frame the view and stage meaningful conversations about historical and contemporary issues and events. https://mmam.org/reframing-the-view

The new exhibition in the Minnesota Marine Art Museum's book arts gallery, “Across a Wide Ocean: Remarkable Stories about the Origins of Identity” delves into two books, “The 1619 Project: Born on the Water” by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Renee Watson and illustrated by Nikkolas Smith (Penguin Random House, 2021); and “The Most Beautiful Thing” by Kao Kalia Yang, illustrated by Khoa Le (Lerner Publishing Group, 2020).

Combining personal, familial, and historical stories across cultures and time, “Across a Wide Ocean” reminds us of the many ways this comes about. Through two award-winning illustrated books, visitors can explore individual accounts of people born on, or transported over, the water, revealing universal wisdom about the origins of identity. This exhibition is on view at MMAM January 27, 2024 - January 5, 2025.
