One of the most interesting things about Minnesota-based but internationally known Anne Labovitz is her commitment to and enthusiasm for connecting with people.
Karen Savage-Blue's paintings draw on the traditions of her Anishinaabe heritage. In "Manoomin Harvest," Savage-Blue depicts her brother collecting manoomin (wild rice). Manoomin is historically, spiritually, and culturally important to the Anishinaabe people. Prior to colonization it was a staple part of their diet. The labor intensive process requires two people to harvest; one person paddles a canoe while the other knocks the grains into the boat using long wooden sticks.

Marlena Myles was the featured artists on Google's homepage yesterday, reimagining the Google logo to honor the indigenous game of stickball. MMAM had the pleasure of having Marlena on site with us for a week this summer as an artist in residence, and we are excited to be working with her in 2023 to create an augmented reality arts experience!
On the first day of Native American heritage month, Google is honoring the North American Indigenous game of stickball with a doodle by Saint Paul-based artist Marlena Myles.
"The museum held a series of community listening sessions earlier this year to rethink what their focus on 'great art inspired by water' could mean today, beyond white men astride their boats.
'We had to ask ourselves, what is the cultural relationship that communities historically have had with water here?' Po***ck says. 'And why is zero of that content in our work — in our collections, in our exhibitions, in our programming?'"

"Nick Wroblewski: The Draw of the Lake" opens today at MMAM!
Nick Wroblewski is an award-winning woodcut printmaker based out of Duluth, MN. On exhibit are his recent large, colorful, handcrafted prints celebrating nature and the rugged beauty of Lake Superior's North Shore.
His printmaking is traditional, technical, and precise, but he leaves room for creativity and spontaneity during the process. Nick's multicolored prints have a style reminiscent of and influenced by 19th century Japanese master printmakers, yet are uniquely his own.

In October of 2013, artist Karen Savage-Blue set a goal to create a new painting every day for 365 days, despite the challenges of everyday life.
"I think that it's important for artists to be committed to their work and to be able to do their painting, or whatever art form they are doing, and not allow external factors to dictate whether they are going to do their art on that day or not," says Savage-Blue.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum operates from Mni Sota Makoce (Land Where the Waters Reflect The Clouds), the traditional homeland of the Dakota people. Residing here since time immemorial, Dakota still call Mni Sota Makoce home, with four federally recognized Dakota nations and many more Dakota people residing in what is now the state of Minnesota. Due to continued legacies of coloniziation, genocide and forced removal, generations of Dakota poeple remain disenfranchised from their traditional homeland. Presently, Mni Sota Makoce has become a refuge and home for many Indigenous nations and peoples, including seven federally recognized Ojibwe nations. We humbly encourage our audiences to reflect upon the historical legacies held in the lands they occupy.

In this episode, he takes a look at a model of one of America's most famous ships: USS Constitution. This scale model of the famed frigate nicknamed "Old Ironsides" contains wood and copper salvaged from the ship itself.
