Today is Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States in 1777. This 1876 painting by Edward Moran is an imagined scene of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor (the statue would not be completed until 1886). In it we see many examples of the stars and stripes, was well as the flags of many other nations and entities. Can you identify any of the flags in this painting?

Edward Moran, "Commerce of Nations Rendering Homage to Liberty," oil on canvas. 1876. Private collection, Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Winona, MN, USA.

Happy birthday to John Constable, born on this day in 1776! Today, Constable is seen as a quintessential English artist. But in his lifetime, he managed to sell more works in France than his native England. Unwilling to leave his home isle and pander to those writing the checks, Constable would state "I would rather be a poor man [in England] than a rich man abroad." See John Constable's "Hellingham Dell" (1823-26), on exhibition at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.

Happy birthday to Emanuel Leutze, born on May 24, 1819, and to Worthington Whittredge, born on May 22, 1820! Many people are familiar with Leutze's "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (1851), and fans of MMAM's Hudson River School collection have likely enjoyed Whittredge's "Autumn on the Delaware" (1875). But what is the connection between these two artists? Both artists lived and worked for several years in Düsseldorf, Germany, and would become close friends. It was in Germany that Leutze painted his famous scene of the American Revolution. In need of models to pose for the figures in his painting, Leutze enlisted Whittredge to sit for none other than George Washington himself (in fact, he would model for the steersman in the rear of the boat as well). While the body may be that of Whittredge, Leutze studied Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1785 bust of Washington, which was modeled from life and is considered the finest likeness of the first president, to create the face. Today, these two paintings by two friends hang across the gallery from each other at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
