Exhibitions are running on schedule at MMAM, despite the shutdown. Once we are able to safely open, you'll be able to catch "Christy Lee Rogers: Baroque Water Worlds." The composition, choreography and bold colors of Rogers' large-scale, underwater digital images are reminiscent of the 17th century Baroque masters.

Exhibition sponsored by HBC.

Belgian artist Alfred Stevens, born on this day in 1823, was known for his paintings of elegantly dressed women. His "The Villa on the Cliffs of Sainte-Adresse" (1884), from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, depicts fashionable vacationers enjoying the day at the seaside. Stevens must have been particularly taken by the young woman in pink with her her back to us at center, as he depicted her again in his "An Elegant Woman" from the same year (see image in comments).

Happy birthday to Frederic Church, born on this day in 1826! Church is one of the best known of the Hudson River School painters. Well traveled, he is famous for painting such scenes as Niagara Falls, the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and the Parthenon in Greece. He stuck to his native New England, however, for his pastoral "Autumn" (1853), on display at the Minnesota Marine art Museum.

Minnesota-born art scholar John Driscoll dies of COVID-19 complications

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of scholar and gallery owner John Driscoll due to complications from COVID-19. Driscoll was instrumental in developing the collections on loan to MMAM, finding such paintings for the Museum as Emanual Leutze's "Washington Crossing the Delaware" and John James Audubon's "White-Headed Eagle," just to name a few. His knowledge, ability, and friendship will be greatly missed.

Paired with Poetry - Gauguin's "Onions" — Minnesota Marine Art Museum

In celebration of National Poetry Month, we have another Paired with Poetry selection from educator, poet and MMAM volunteer Laura Armstrong. You will never think of the humble onion the same after reading Pablo Neruda's "Ode to an Onion," paired with Paul Gauguin's "Still Life with Onions."

#nationalpoetrymonth

Can you remember the last time you really looked at an onion? Onions are essential to many dishes we enjoy, and yet they are so mundane that we purchase them in bags, as if they were not worthy to be considered as individuals. As a subject for art, they seem unlikely candidates.

The Artist Grid

Winona Creative Laureate and MMAM partner Sarah Johnson sat down to talk with Andy Bauer of The Artist Grid about mental heath and creativity in the world of COVID-19.

Based here in Winona, the Artist Grid seeks to connect and grow supportive arts communities for creators though artist based supportive programming, inter-community collaboration, and creator networking and promotion.

#stayhomemn #museumsfromhome #museummomentofzen

Heyo!

I got the chance to talk to the wonderful Sarah Johnson! Before I talk about our conversation, I want to talk about the event that Sarah is hosting on Friday. Sarah has put together an event to get creatives in our community together to check in with each other, check in on each other's mental health, see how we are all handling this situation. I think this is incredibly pertinent in times like this. Our community is an important aspect of how we will move through this. The link to that event is in the comment section!

I loved talking with Sarah. Sarah is one of the most compassionate, empathetic, creative, and caring people I know. I always feel a bit more relaxed and thoughtful after talking with her. Sarah wears many different hats as an artist, a musician, a mental health worker, a cat owner, and a human. I think that this conversation will be helpful for many people right now.

What a treasure! Not to be missed if you're in the area.
We had the best afternoon strolling through this beautiful art museum. The pieces on exhibit were of the caliber you would expect to find only in a large city. Can't wait to visit again with my mom who was an art teacher.
