Very few pictures to be found of the inside of the Carnegie Library. It used to sit along the 100 block of W. Carnegie until it was torn down in 1967. In this photo you'll find members of the Standard Club, identified as (l-r) Ruth Wright, Grace Steed, Alice Paschall, Oma Dell Miller, and Fern Gilbreath. Mr. Gilbreath is for whom the current library is named.

With the mention of the Standard Club, this month marks their 125th anniversary. The Standard Club was first organized in September, 1901 at the home of Mrs. J. D. Richardson, and it was later reorganized on January 31st, 1902.

The charter members of the Standard Club explicitly named in the historical records include:

Mrs. J. D. Richardson
Madame R. N. Robertson
Madame R. C. Campbell
Madame Will C. Anderson

The club initially formed with a full membership of 15 ladies and gentlemen, before reorganizing to include only ladies. Additionally, Mrs. Leola Trotter is recognized for giving the club its name.

How many of you remember the The Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train? Wow, what a way to celebrate the Great State of Texas' 150th birthday and Winnsboro was the first stop!

The Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train was a massive 3,000-mile journey across Texas in 1986 to celebrate the state's 150th birthday. The wagon train arrived in Winnsboro on January 3, 1986 after the trip started in Sulphur Springs. It came to it's conclusion July 3, 1986, at the Fort Worth Stockyards after traveling over 3,000 miles in a jagged circle around the state.

It was designed to pass within 100 miles of every town or city in Texas, visiting more than 150 communities. Around 10,000 riders from 27 states joined for parts of the trip, with a core group completing the entire six-month route.

The Winnsboro Winnsboro Area Chamber of Commerce will hold it's annual Classic Car Show this Saturday on the Depot parking lot. Come see some historic vehicles and then come in and see some Winnsboro history!

This one is a little further back than the last, but I'm sure many will remember some of these names. We do have a young man, second from left on the back row with no name, so if anyone has info on who he is, we would love to set the record straight!

To keep our current displays safe, we cannot accept items with mold, smoke damage, or signs of pests. We also generally cannot accept items without a direct Winnsboro connection or large furniture without prior approval.

A Friendly Reminder: Please do not leave items unattended at the door. Our tour volunteers are not authorized to accept donations—they are here to share history, not process it!

As local students head back to the classrooms this week, we’re taking a stroll down memory lane to see how back-to-school looked in years past!

Check out Miss Connie Mae Wright’s 1st Grade Class at Westbrook Elementary School from the 1952–1953 school year (originally published in the 1953 WISD Tomahawk yearbook, courtesy of Carlos Miller).
