Anderson serves to interpret and preserve the historical narratives of coastal North Carolina across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A major pre-Revolutionary port on North Carolina's Cape Fear River, Brunswick was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt. During the Civil War, Fort Anderson was constructed atop the old village site, and served as part of the Cape Fear River defe

nses below Wilmington before the fall of the Confederacy. Colonial foundations dot the present-day tour trail, which crosses the earthworks of the Confederate fort. Situated on over 100 acres of land located directly on the Cape Fear River, the site and Visitor Center/Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 9am-5pm. While at Brunswick you can visit the site’s Museum to learn more about the Spanish Attack of 1748, in which a small group of citizens defended the town against the onslaught of Spanish Privateers; the Stamp Act Resistance of 1766, the first successful armed rebellion against British authority in the American Colonies; and the fall of Ft. Anderson in 1865, a structure which is today one of the best preserved earthen fortifications in the United States. Fully ADA accessible and rich in Colonial and Civil War history, this serene riverside setting makes for a memorable outing.

The North Carolina African American Heritage Commission (NCAAHC) and the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site are pleased to announce the dedication of the Africa to Carolina Inclusive Public Art Initiative! The public ceremony will be held Thursday, July 16, at 10 a.m., on the grounds of Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site. This art is made possible by the NCAAHC's receiving of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation’s Inclusive Public Art Grant.

The site is the first public art installation in North Carolina to commemorate the history of African disembarkation along the state’s coast. The “Africa to Carolina” initiative identifies the forced arrival of enslaved Africans to North Carolina in the early sixteenth century and looks to physically memorialize these sites. Brought to ports including Bath, Beaufort, Brunswick, Edenton, New Bern, and Wilmington, these individuals endured unimaginable hardships yet played a crucial role in building North Carolina’s settlements and shaping its culture, economy, and community bonds.

Join us Saturday May 9th for a wondefull opertunity to study the various bird species that we have here at BTFA. Jeff Ezzelle, a long time voulnteer and member of the Friends of Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson, will be leading a special birding tour of the site. Jeff has been birding at BTFA for over 40 years, and we are super excited for this oppertunity to learn from him.

The tour will begin at 10am and will be free of charge but donations to our support group are encouraged. Make sure to bring comfy shoes, your binoculars, and your bird books! Hope to see you then!
