AG Day at Statham Elementary was March 20, the first day of Spring. The annual event focuses on showing young students about the importance of agriculture to their lives.
The Barrow County Historical Society participated by displaying historic photos of Barrow’s connection to the land and showing off some items related to farm life from years ago including a hand-cranked ice cream churn and a vintage milk can donated to the museum by local families.
Volunteers Joan and Michael Tiller, Judy Ann Eicher, Elaine Wright and Mary Alice Lay joined LeAnne Akin to engage with the students and point out the local tie to Future Farmers of America. Statham High School, which had its last graduating class in 1950, started Georgia’s first FFA chapter in 1928.

Snow what? The museum will be closed Saturday, Jan. 31, so everyone can stay home and play in the snow. Sure beats ice, right?

Russell Middle School 8th graders Walking Tour of Winder included a tour of the Barrow County Museum. These were from Day Two. This is an annual walking tour coordinated by social studies teacher Emily Watson -- governmental and historic in nature -- to acquaint students with their community. A tradition: Group photos on the steps of the historic courthouse.
After the two days of walking around Winder and visiting the museum, Winder Police Department, Winder Fire Department, the Historic Courthouse (with a talk by District Attorney Brad Smith), Bank OZK and the Colleen O. Williams Theatre, Ms. Watson said to those hosting the classes, "As a lifelong Barrow County resident, it always fills me with pride to show our students just how special this place is."

The TomSchoolery Homeschool Group visited the Barrow County Museum today to learn about how children learned to read and write during pioneer days. They also learned hands-on how letters were written with quill and ink, folded and mailed as Judy Ann Eicher, a museum volunteer who is also a Fort Yargo Living History Society member, shared her knowledge.
The group also heard several stories from the area's early history adapted by retired education professional Lynn Hammond and read by museum volunteer Lorn Burkhammer.
A museum tour included a step inside a jail cell where Lorn Burkhammer stressed such confinement is not a desired living arrangement.

More scenes from Russell Middle School 8th graders as they toured the Barrow County Museum. Just one stop along their walking tour of downtown Winder. Should mention for those who don't know... this has been the museum for 32 years but served as the first Barrow County Jail -- built as the first county building after the county was chartered in 1914. The remaining downstairs cell is a popular spot, and Mann E. Quin, who shows off Winder-made overalls also makes a good photo. This was the Work Clothes Capital of the World "back in the day."

When thinking of the Town of Bethlehem, manger scenes and Harrison Poultry likely come to mind.
At the Oct. 23 membership meeting of the Barrow County Historical Society hosted at the Bethlehem Community Center, displays spotlighted both.
Ann Stowe Wilburn, whose father worked at Harrison Poultry as did her husband, Donnie (42 years), shared some of the amazing contributions made by Harold Harrison and his family's ag businesses which have employed thousands.
Harold Harrison also honored the memory of his parents by funding the construction of Bethlehem First United Methodist Church's sanctuary and fellowship hall on Christmas Avenue.
More from the meeting to come.
