From an Abandoned Storage Unit to History Books: Happy 38th Birthday to Founder Derek Lloyd! 🏛️📸

Today we’re celebrating our founder, Derek Lloyd, and the incredible journey that built The Legends of Indiana Micro-Museum.

What began as an effort to honor Indiana’s iconic history took an extraordinary turn when Derek acquired a forgotten storage unit containing 40 master 35mm film negatives—uncovering 112 unpublished photos from Elvis Presley’s final 2 concerts at Riverfront Coliseum & Market Square Arena on June 25/26, 1977.

Recognizing the monumental weight of what he held, Derek took on the meticulous work of digitizing, verifying, and preserving what has become the greatest music photo archive ever discovered in a storage unit. But he didn't stop there. He documented the entire saga, securing a contract with Schiffer Publishing to write the definitive account of the discovery in his upcoming book, Elvis: The Final Curtain, coming May 2027.

From creating "The General's Wall" to putting historical Indiana pop culture on a national stage, Derek’s vision has turned a local storefront into a home for living legacy.

Join us in wishing Derek a fantastic 38th birthday today! Drop a birthday wish in the comments below! 🎉👇

I wanted to share a one-of-a-kind, fully provenanced archive with you all...

Rather than standard mass-produced Elvis memorabilia, this is a complete primary-source grouping from an Indiana attendee (Janet Woods from Portland, IN) who was physically in the audience at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 18, 1973—the infamous night four men rushed the stage, interrupting Elvis's act, and Elvis used a karate chop to knock one of the men off the stage.

What Makes This Archive So Compelling:
Original AP Newspaper Clipping: Titled "Elvis Throws a Punch," detailing the four men jumping on stage, Elvis's karate chop, and the crowd's standing ovation. Handwritten note at the bottom reads, "Finally – Here it is."

Complete Travel & Booking Provenance: Includes the original Citizens Bank of Portland (IN) travel invoice dated Feb 14, 1973, for the "Las Vegas Hilton Spree Package" ($232 total), along with hand-written TWA flight itineraries (IND to STL to LAS) and original TWA Coach Boarding Passes ( #563 and #223).

On-Table Show Ephemera: Original blue-and-gold Las Vegas Hilton International napkin, original Las Vegas Hilton Showroom menu insert, gold crown International drink stirrer, and the Las Vegas Hilton Souvenir Menu ("NOW ELVIS").

Promotional Materials: Original flyer promoting the upcoming NBC Aloha From Hawaii satellite broadcast and Elvis On Tour MGM release.

It’s an incredible "witness to history" collection that documents a legendary moment in Elvis's performance career from the exact table where it happened.

🌱 UNBELIEVABLE NEW MUSEUM ACQUISITION: REAL GRASS FROM THE GATES OF GRACELAND (JULY 1975)! 👑

Talk about dedication to the King! We just finished custom framing one of the most unique, wild pieces of 1970s pop-culture history.
On July 17, 1975, a friend of Janet named Byron stayed at The Coach and Four Motor Lodge right down the street from Graceland in Memphis. He walked right up to Elvis Presley’s famous music gates, plucked a piece of grass, tucked it inside a letter to Janet back home in Indiana, and mailed it off! ✉️

The letter hilariously reads:
“Enclosed please find real grass (uh, er, w**d) from just outside the gate to the Elvis Mansion...”

Over 50 years later, this blade of grass survived untouched, perfectly preserved alongside the original motel letterhead and postmarked Memphis envelope. It doesn't get more real, personal, or organic than this!
📍 Come check it out in person on display now at The Legends of Indiana Micro-Museum!
