The Wilton Historical Society will host a special presentation on the history of Wilton Central School, later known as the Green School, on Thursday September 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the museum.
Wilton Central School opened in 1903, during Wilton’s centennial year. Over the decades, hundreds of students passed through its doors, and many area residents still remember their time there with fondness.
In the school’s later years, the building became widely known as the Green School because of its green siding. After serving the Wilton community for many years, the building became outdated and was razed in 1984.
We hope many former students will attend the presentation and share memories of the school, its teachers, and school activities. We hope you can join us.

The answer to yesterday’s post, “What was Kineowatha Camps called before 1914?” is Blue Mountain Camps. In 1901, about 25 acres next to Wilson Lake were purchased by Willis and Ruth Bacheller and they initially built about 10 cabins. Blue Mountain Camps “opened up on opportunity for summer outings under the most favorable condition for music work and vacation rest” is a quote from a newspaper at the time. Later, in 1914, the camp was purchase by Lizzie Bass and Mr McCall and a salesman from GH Bass, George Clark also had an interest in the camp. In the 1920s, Lizzie Bass and her sister Ann became sole owners until 1948. Between 1948 and 1975, the Wellman E Roys (Roys family) operated the camp. The property now “Kineowatha Park” in enjoyed by the town. The Wilton Historical Society will be giving a presentation on the camp, focusing on the earliest history on Aug. 13, 2026 at 6:30 PM at the museum on Canal Street

The Wilton Historical Society invites you to a special presentation on July 9th at 6:30 pm in celebration of America’s 250 Anniversary. The program will highlight American Revolutionary War soldiers with connections to Wilton. Although Wilton was first settled in 1789-six years after the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, many veterans later moved to the region and became closely tied to Wilton’s early history. Some of Wilton’s earliest settlers were involved with the Battle of Lexington and Concord, as well as the Battle of Bunker Hill. Join us for an enjoyable evening as we learn about Wilton’s Revolutionary War veterans. Our meeting room now has a new air-conditioning system, so the space should be comfortable. Hope to see you there.

Join us on Thursday June 11, 2026, at 6:30 PM at the Wilton Farm and Home Museum for a presentation by Sean Minear. What is Souvenir China? Souvenir china was popular at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. With advancement in transportation, people traveled more, and souvenir china provided a way for them to remember where they’d visited. It was also a time when people felt strongly about their communities, and souvenir china depicted places people took pride in. The museum’s collection includes dozens of ceramic plates and cups decorated with images of local landmarks such as Wilton Academy, local scenery. We will have a number of these pieces on display. We invite members/guests to bring in examples that they might own for others to see. Sean is an enthusiastic speaker, and this promises to be a fascinating presentation. We hope to see you there.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we honor two Wilton Vietnam soldiers, Bard Davenport and Leslie Dalrymple who died serving their country.

Bard Davenport was killed along with four other crew members on March 27. 1969 by hostile fire that took down their aircraft. Bard was 23 years old. Bard Davenport graduated from Wilton Academy in 1965. Vietnam Virtual Wall www.virtualwall.org in 2004 post " Lovingly remembered and missed by his mother, Delcena Welch, and his sister, Karen Ann McNaught. His memory lives on through his family and friends.

Leslie Dalrymple was killed on November 20, 1969. Dalrymple was in Unit Alpha 2 60 Infantry. Leslie's family writes on the Vietnam Virtual Wall www.virtualwall.org in 2005 "Leslie, An awesome big brother, a wonderful son, and a brave young man. You are always in our thoughts and our hearts. Love, Mon, Brian, Lynn, and Karen".
Leslie was 20 years old and only had been in Vietnam 31 days
before he was killed.

We honor these two young and to ALL those soldiers who gave their lives for the country. You are remembered.

The Wilton Historical Society will host its Annual Meeting and the election of officers on May 14, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the museum. Members and guests are invited to participate in our annual potluck dinner, which will precede a short business meeting and the elections of officers. Everyone is encouraged to bring their favorite dish to share.
Come and learn about the ongoing research conducted by the society and view select artifacts from our collection and hear the stories behind them.
We have recently discovered a collection of rarely seen photographs maintained by the Maine Historical Preservation Commission. The museum is currently working to add these images to our collection. The enclosed image is one of the MHPC photographs. Can you find museum building in the picture that dates ca 1880? The museum building located nearly in the center of picture with the sawmill just below. No Bass building yet, not until 1904.
We hope you will join us for an enjoyable evening, where you can engage with fellow history enthusiasts, learn about society’s efforts to expand, share and preserve its distinctive collection.

Join us on April 9, 2026, at 6:30 PM for presentation on “What’s For Sale In Wilton?” This event will explore the history of everyday commerce in Wilton. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century newspaper ads from Franklin Journals and Wilton Times give us a glimpse of what was for sale and how much the product cost. Imagine getting hamburger, 2 lb for 77 cents at Frowler’s or picking up three dozen eggs at Chase’s Market for $ 1.45. The power point presentation will show pictures of businesses along with their newspaper advertisements. This event is made possible in part due to the recent donation of bound volumes of the Franklin Journal given to use by the National Trust for Local News. Did you know that in 1951 Backus Garage was selling a Studebaker Commander V8 for??? Well, I guess you need to come to find out that answer. Hope to see you there.
