Art helps shape community

CAM Curator Ben Billingsley recently led a private talk for New Hanover County Government, NC employees on Home in the Cape Fear: Selected Works from Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, NC, currently on view for employees at the New Hanover County Government Center.

Installed on the second floor, the exhibition brings works from CAM’s permanent collection into a civic space, highlighting artists who have shaped Wilmington’s creative identity and interpreted life in the Cape Fear region.

Now extended through 2028, Home in the Cape Fear features works by Claude Howell, Donald Furst, Hobson Pittman, Virginia Wright-Frierson, Caroline Von Glahn, and more.

We are grateful for the opportunity to continue sharing these works with our community through this partnership with New Hanover County.

On Tuesday, June 23, CAM's Heather Wilson joins Cape Fear Literacy Council’s Adult Story Hour at Azalea Station for a special evening of readings and conversation.

Heather will read from the journals of Claude Howell, a beloved Wilmington artist whose work is part of CAM’s collection. Known for his vivid depictions of coastal life, Howell’s words offer another window into the artist’s creative mind and deep connection to our region.

The evening also features author Emily Colin, with a Q&A following the readings.

Stories of courage, resilience, and community come to the screen.

CAM at the Movies continues with Legacy, a powerful short film chronicling the oral histories of descendants of the United States Colored Troops. Produced by Cameron Art Museum's Daniel Jones and Heather Wilson and directed by Adam Alphin, the film traces the lives and legacies of USCT soldiers whose impact continues to shape our region and beyond.

Following the screening, stay for a conversation with filmmaker Adam Alphin and producer Daniel Jones exploring the research behind the film and its connection to CAM's ongoing interpretive work.
